Though BTC has its technical issues, I can't see how they won't be ironed out to make it a viable long-term currency option.

Should be worth well in excess of $2k come 2020.

It's pretty likely that Bitcoin would hit $2k in 2014 already, if not it probably will in the next few years. I'd say at least $5k by 2020.

By 2020, people will not be thinking of BTC in terms of value based on dollars/euros/etc.  It will most likely evolve into something new completely, or perhaps just an upgraded version.  The blockchain by then would be enormous.  Bitcoin is revolutionary but not perfect.

Pointless guessing a price because any guess is just pure speculation. Nobody can tell you what it'll be worth even tomorrow never mind in 2020.

2020? The dollar as we know it now won't exist by then I suspect, but I've played along with your logic on the poll and voted for $2000+ I reckon that they'll have probably hyperinflated the currency so much 1 Bitcoin will be worth something stupid like $100,000,000

You realize that 2020 is less than 6 years away?

The vast majority of the change in the exchange rate USD <-> BTC will come from the change in value of BTC at least in the near future.

And with all enthusiasms let us not forget that despite widespread acceptance Bitcoin are still inherently far more risky than dollars. The chances of bitcoin collapsing in the next 6 years are far greater than that of US dollars becoming completely worthless.

This is why investing in BTC can still give you such high returns if everything works. High risk = high returns, low risks = low returns. This is the rule for investing in just about anything.

Why is Bitcoin riskier exactly? The code is available for everyone to see so any problems will be fixed if any experts spot them, the money supply is limited through the blockchain to only 21 million, Bitcoin has no government or people trying to commit fraud in it's name by pretending there's more of it than there actually is ( Though I'm sure people like the Winklevoss twins will certainly try ) and when you talk about volatility in the price of Bitcoin everybody conveniently forgets that it's paper money that Bitcoin is being priced against rather than precious metals or physical goods.

So please, unless you're going to go into as much detail as I am don't go saying things like Bitcoin has a greater chance of collapsing unless you're actually going to explain why.

It's too early to say. You'd be foolish to say Bitcoin or cryptocurrencies are foolproof and flawless and will be forever. Who knows what will happen to either fiat or cryptos in the near or distant future. I very much doubt the $ or £ will collapse within 6 years, nor do I think BTC (or another crypto) will become the dominating currency within then. Hopefully it will within our lifetime if it continues to work, but I'm sceptical of the entire people / general public adopting it fully any time soon (but I hope to be proved wrong).

I'd say > 2000. I hope I have a lot of BTC by then!  Grin

crypto's fossilize the hashpower required for their production. their value is proportional to the price of this hashpower.

Hopefully we should hit $2000 by the end of 2014 when we get more adoption and widespread use. By 2020 it could be as high as $10,000...... or it could equally be $0  Wink

These projections seem a bit off or don't add up. Surely if we'll hit $2000 this year then in 2020 it'll be more than 10k.

The trick is, to buy as many as you can, as fast as you can, every year BTCBTCBTC 10X folds at a minimum , sometimes even 30x fold.

Buy in on a good crash and relax because the longer you wait the less BTCBTCBTC you'll ever be able to afford.

Yes, but it'd doubtful it will continue to rise like that.
