I am interested to find out more about this niche as I can always see big injections of capital around it, possibly sparked by the attention the ethereum community seems to be giving to it. Simply put, tends to pay well to be an early investor in those.
So far other than Raiden Network (which everybody knows) I have identified Plasma / Plasma Cash, which Vitalik has talked about, and Striim by Hubii network which is gonna be officially launched this week.

Are there any other big upcoming ethereum scaling solutions?

A distributed system attempts to access an API data source, but since the nodes need not execute the instructions simultaneously, the data provided by the API can yield different results. Hence you need to build some kind of time to API value lookup table; formally called oracle.

I think raiden network is a serious project, they already have a social platform for discussing and sharing stuff, also they understand the issues with current erc tokens and share the updates regularly, they are developing something awesome to make eth network advanced and with big potential, i hope eth team will also welcome them and both of the teams can collaborate for the betterment of the tokenization platform.

Both HBT/STRIIM and RDN have their pros and cons:

RDN:
+ only scaling solution which currently works
+ very popular because was initially in the ethereum roadmap, (and many people don't know it's not anymore)
- is not powering any specific/heavy/famous platform or project and at the same time has been rejected by the ethereum devs gang; now it's competitive but who knows whether it will be used

HBT:
+ striim will be a protocol plus ethereum scaling solution
+ will start with an exchange powered by it
+ hubii has strong connections with telenor (22.5 billion $ market cap) and they'll be using striim for seamless micropayments
- it is ready but there is not a big amount of information about it, the official announcement should be today (pretty much most of the info leaked on telegram has been pasted here by ninobtc https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2041531.msg38151902#msg38151902)

Possibly now is the best time to get in hbt as still around ico price and on the level of conversation on their telegram makes it look like they are actually doing some solid work (e.g. no talks about lambos and moon lol).

Both threads on bitcointalk have good info about them.

I like their team too, they do some good steady work. Now they seem a bit stuck in some sort of low-key technology study but yes, they are good.

Striim has been announced. Looks really good. Let's wait for the whitepaper.

Thanks for the post. I rarely thank people for these type of posts but I had NO idea these types of scaling solutions existed for Ethereum. To be honest, I'd already heard about Plasma, but I thought it was simply a tech upgrade (like Lightning Network is to Bitcoin?) that would help scale, so I guess I still have a lot to learn. I'm going to spend time now looking at these, Striim looks a little quirky at first glance.

Isn't this done by simply investing in Ethereum?

Following simple logical deduction, if you invest in Ethereum and these scaling solutions take off, you would eventually turn a good profit becomes Ethereum ends up being a successful project. I probably don't know much of the more technical details but do Raiden or Striim or other scaling solutions run on their own blockchain?

There are many Ethereum scaling solutions out there and no one is production ready, I think I will pick this project Gochain, it went under the radar for many people more than 1000/s tx so far and is compatible with Ethereum platforms so I expect some dapps on Ehtereum to be working with the team

Same as Raiden, Striim (HBT) will moon even if Vitalik does not approve; the price will increase off the back of usage, technology demonstration, partnerships and concrete plans rather than hype through crypto celeb approval.
Raiden price went up and Vitalik only criticisms were about RDN's token and ICO, not the technology itself.
If he hadn't shat on RDN's fund raising ethics, it would be much higher than 80m.
I agree it's not the end all be all, but we both know that it will affect the price, and we won't see the true value of HBT until after the platform is widely adopted and fully developed (and price is largely end user demand driven) just like it did for netflix or amazon stock. Hype and endorsement affects the speculation that fuels how high the price goes above the value of the project at a specific time.
RDN and HBT prices going up (RDN already did) will spark the interest of other developers to create more offchain scaling projects, and ETH will get stronger and stronger.

Raiden and plasma are concerned with different problems. The only common denominator is the effort to increase the power of the etheric network.

Plasma is a technique basically an ecosystem of contracts that aims to raise ethereum's computational potential; it is not a protocol.
Striim by hubii will offer an offchain scaling solution but is essentially a protocol.
Raiden is an offchain scaling solution.

For me I think it is a stupid thing to do, I personally believe there is no need for all these projects to do ICO, It is just like Lighting Lab saying to use Lighting network you would need to use their won tokens, so what will even make it worse is that has this tokens become expensive it would be more expensive to use the network

The Striim tokens are actually airdropped to hbt holders.
Of course they will be tradeable, but I believe their use would be relative to their price (e.g. with BNB same thing, if their price goes up it doesn't mean that it gets more expensive to use BNB to pay against Binance transaction fees).

Anyway stupid or not, on telegram they confirmed striim will be used across the whole network of users in a seamless way (i.e. people won't know they are using striim) so stupid or not it will work.

Most solutions in Ethereum will not be separate projects, but additions to the original. So by investing in ETH you are already investing in these projects. It is very likely that Constantinople will be released in the second half of this year, so the Metropolis will be complete. In addition to providing a faster, cheaper and safer solution. We may finally have zk-SNARKs.

Then we'll wait for the Serenity. That will finally turn Ethereum into a POS along with the Casper project.

Investing in ETH today means believing that these projects will be successful.

Interesting article. Yes, betting on eth scaling is betting on eth as well to an extent.

Dear all, thank you for starting the discussion.
Happy to answer any questions you might have about striim. Also, feel free to join the telegram group as it is small and very dedicated; you might find a lot of answers in the group and also engaged individuals who are rather savvy on striim.

Anyway, thank you again for bringing striim up  Smiley
