Through a crowdfunding campaign we have successfully raised funds for the surgery! I apologize for the people thinking this was a scam post, it was actually his family searching for any means possible to make extra money to get him through this that brought me into the crypto world in the first place. Now I'm completely hooked!

There are many crowd funding platforms that have been created for this particular purpose, but in fiat eg. gofundme. I am not sure if the same exist for cryptocurrencies.

There are many things you will have to take into consideration with exchange rates and fees etc and work out which way would be the best way to go and don't forget to take into consideration the time involved to convert the cryptos to fiat the family can use.  Depending on your country a registered charity may need to be set up and if you are planning on using PayPal, you will have to go through the right channels with them or your account will get locked and so to will the money.

In 2011 I had to start a crowd funding project to raise money for my husband to have a tumor removed from his neck. None of this was covered by medical insurance (long story) and I had 4 weeks to come up with $30000 for the operation.

You would be suprised what can be achieved in a short time if you gather friends and family together to raise money.  Getting the media involved and the local community is a major part in the process.

I would suggest the first thing you do if gather immediate family and friends together and say that you need to raise funds.  Then setup a crowd funding project, tell the story and spread it through facebook as much as you can and brainstorm together about ways you can raise money. Notify local newspaper and tv news and radio and try and get their help.  This is something your brother may or may not want to be involved in as it can be very stressful and time consuming in an already very stressful environment.

We did raffles (but prizes were donated from businesses in the community), a monster garage sale where everyone donated things they didn't need from their house and we turned it into a family fun day in a park with jumping castles and balloons and food etc, people sold things on eBay and gave us the money, donation tins in the shops in the area, the schools had a special dress up day where they came dressed up and paid a donation towards the charity, we had pizza shops donating $1 from every pizza for a week. 

It is all very overwhelming now I am sure, but if you all work as a team I am sure you will get there

you can sell the coins to btc on cryptsy. then you can send btc to virwox. on virwox you sell to BTC/SLL. then buy USD with SLL. Then send USD to paypal/skrill/neteller and you have access to the funds very fast, whole process takes about 1 hour, only waiting time is for bitcoin to transfer to virwox, rest is instant.

Whenever you need to switch to USD, you can use BTC-e. They do paypal and wire transfers. I'd recommend wire transfer, but I've had success with paypal from them.
