Yes.  Each new blockchain branch or new chain would be a new alternate coin.  Only the one chain that follows the Bitcoin protocol would be the real Bitcoins.  Most alt coins are new chains a few are branches.

Our family was terrorized by Homeland Security.  Read all about it here:  http://www.jmwagner.com/ and http://www.burtw.com/  Any donations to help us recover from the $300,000 in legal fees and forced donations to the Federal Asset Forfeiture slush fund are greatly appreciated!

I am a bitcoin noob who registered here for exactly this type of information. I had no idea blockchains could have branches for different alt coins. Could you give some examples of alt coins that have blockchains branched from the bitcoin blockchain?

I do not follow the alts at all because most are such a total waste of time.  So I must admit I should have said:

Yes.  Each new blockchain branch or new chain would be a new alternate coin.  Only the one chain that follows the Bitcoin protocol would be the real Bitcoins.  Most alt coins are new chains and it is theoretically possible to create an alt from a branch of Bitcoin.

Someone who follows the alts can comment as to which, if any, were created as branches.

Here is a pretty good technical thread on branching the blockchain that I moderated (and eventually locked).  Read it and post your questions here if you have any.
