I've had a BFL single running for about 4 months on a 700w power supply. Last week I smelled smoke and found that my power supply was burnt out. I have tried to swap with another power supply but it blew that one up right away. Any ideas what could be wrong?

The original power supplies aren't great, so I am not surprised it burned out.  As for the second one, it may not have been powerful enough.  You need about 650 watts and 50 amps on a single rail.  Try an Corsair CX750 and it should last as long as your SC does, remember down time cost you money! .
