I have not updated my wallet and it seems to work fine? What will happen if i update? i have not done this before?

If you do not UPDATE by block 11,000  you will be on the wrong chain. this is a hard fork and is mandatory. If you are mining one of the pools they are both on the correct chain. However to get your coins you will need the upgraded wallet
