Why do you think this is slow for a system that has no GPU?

If you are trying to mine scrypt based coins or even quark based coins with DO i am sorry to tell you but it is 100% loss.

VPS mining is only for strict CPU coins...

What what are the best CPU coins and should I use pools (which) or solo. Also are there alternatives to DigitalOcean?

Thanks
