hey guys i plan on investing $25,000 (more later) into some very nice scrypt based rigs.. my question is which gpu would be better to use.. the 280x,290,290x (or one im forgetting) i know the 290x gets the most kh/s but it may not be the best price per kh/s so im hoping for some expert opinions Thanks in advance,

With that budget you can get a ASIC miner. Such as Cointerra or KNC miner.

Go for it, if you want to get 290x. But I am telling you, you can make more coins getting a ASIC mining equipment. Also electric is cheaper.

The best price k/hash wise is the 280x.
Friendly advice though, you will either need a very large room to host all the machines or a good air conditioner running 24/7. Not to mention you will need to draw a lot of electricity from the wall, you will need to calculate how many machines each outlet from the electrical installation can handle and to add new ones. Its not that hard though...

If I was to invest that kind of cash, I would strongly consider a scrypt asic. https://alpha-t.net/shop/Maybe they'll have a batch 2

Yeah I have all that planned out. The first $25,000 would all be able to fit in my basement, when we expand we will move into a data center (my dad has many connections and can get it cheap)

This. 280x all the way. My number crunching from our real-world rigs and also from other people's data says that the 280x are both the best Khs/USD, and also the best Khs/Watt (when undervolted). This includes the cost of added MB/CPU/RAM/PSUs for buying more rigs. $25k could buy you somewhere around 10x $2500 rigs. $200 for MB/CPU/RAM $200 for 2x 750W PSUs $100 for 5 USB risers $2000 for 5 280x When undervolted, you're looking at ~3.5MH/s @ ~1300W. This puts you at 35Mh/s. I'd suggest running the PSUs off a 240V, which would save a tad on power. Adding in the power requirements for cooling, and you're looking at either 3x 30A or 2x 50A 220 circuits. This is assuming you already have the infrastructure in place. If your power distribution, cooling requirements, and physical housing are included in that budget, you're looking at closer to 8 rigs. Don't go for an ASIC. I doubt we'll get ASICs before 2015. We barely have any FPGAs in the hands of customers, and all the companies that are claiming ASICs are sketchy as all hell.

@crazyyates, even the 270 or 270x? Supposedly cheaper to run both Khs/USD and Khs/Watt, and maybe less noisy? I was about to do some number crunching, but if you've already done it, would appreciate what you came up with.

Yep, the 280x even beats out the 270x. The 270x does have a better Khs/USD ratio, but only for the actual card itself. Because it takes a ton more MB/PSUs/risers/etc to get to the same hashrate, those added costs actually make it a bit more expensive in the end. The same things happens when you move from 280x to 290s. You save costs on not buying as many actual rigs, but the cards themselves are too overpriced in this case, so it ends up being a loss. 280x are the 7950s of a year ago, and I don't think that's gonna change anytime soon.

ALL ARE WRONG
easy answer FROM REAL EXPERIENCE 7990 NO R9 290x NO
Sapphire R9 270....NOT the x model (I have 3 and will buy MANY more) Sapphire R9 290x is $700 (with tax) I have 4
CDN $200 (local tax is 15% not included)
so 2x R9 270's = $460 for 2x 468Kh/s = 460/968 AND MUCH less power use
1x R9 290x = $700 for 965kh/s = 700/965
diff pays MORE than cost for risers and extra boards PSU's etc...
But why the hell should I give this EARNED advice to such a vulture who is ALREADY rich... Because I'm poor and stupid and desperate but KIND

You should either check your numbers or have a look at the 280x...
r9 280x = 400$ and does 740 kh/s =1.85 k/usd vs 2.03 k/usd
Lets say you use an mb that supports 5 cards. Thats a 360 usd difference in between the cards in your favour
With 1 populated you will be doing 3700 kh/s and use ~1500w.
You will need 8 270 cards to overcome that hashrate by a little bit, and you will be using ~1800w.
You will also need to get an extra mb, ram, pen drive / hdd, processor and a set of risers. Wether its cheaper to build it or not depends on how much you spend on this items. You will also need some sort of frame to support the cards above the mb.
mb 120 usd, cpu 50 usd, riser 10 usd (you need 3 more so 30) ram 40 usd frame 50 usd (I build my own with my 3d printer, but you will likely spend more) 16 gb pen drive 15 usd
Totalling 310
Plus the extra power draw will end up costing you more when you do it in bulk, more psus, more outlets
Not to mention you will need more space and have more heat to remove.

Another one smells quick money, so many risks involved would hope you are aware of that. We can wake up tomorrow and markets fall out.
