Hi,

I have run into problem with one of my Jalapeno's which doesn't seem to be listed anywhere else. Normally only the PSU goes to hell (which happened) but now the miner doesn't work even with a good working adapter. It is not dead - the red light is still on and it blinks several times when it is plugged in (which is normal) but when I connect the USB, there is no reaction on the PC side - at all. Does aynone know what can be the problem? I am wondering if the whole board is done for or if it ccan be rapaired easily. I want to sell the thing anyway so it is really just the case of getting more money for working unit.

Thanks for any comments on this.

Jally doctor to the rescue :-)

1) Where are you located? This makes a difference.
2) What happens when you plug it in? Which lights come on. There should be:

a power LED by the power jack.
Two little Leds in between the power jack and the USB
A LED on the front.

What should happen is power led comes on, front LED flashes, then two LEDs in middle light and front stays solid.

Hi, thanks for making the time!

1) Europe (Czech republic)
2) All 4 LEDs do exactly what they should - just the same as the other Jalapeno that's working.

The problem is a blown FTDI chip caused by your power supply going to ground and putting 50% of your electricity voltage across the ground plane and into your computer. The power supply is bad and should not be plugged into your other jalapeno. It should be flagged and trashed.

The jally will either need to be RMAed or you will have to find someone who can replace the chip. I have done it once, it is a screaming pain for a medium level rework person like myself, but should be simpler for somoene who reworks X-Boxes and PS3's for a living.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but this seems to happen in the EU. Long term solution is to get a locally sourced power supply that is of a quality to handle your type of power needs and providers.

Thanks a lot for the help!! I am glad to know what the problem is! I will see if I can sell it for parts than. I guess RMA would take so long that the working Jally would cost less at the time than broken one now, haha Cheesy

Indeed, that is a problem. I'd offer some bitcoin for it for parts, but it would be a small amount. How about 40% of the potential mining ability of it 2 weeks from now as measured by mining.thegenesisblock.com? :-)

Hello,

Where you get new FTDI chip/which type? Is this only a problem?  So changing him I will be able to get my jala back to live?
Which staff do you you to resold it?

Thank you for reply.

So I only need to replace FTDI Chip? No resistor, diode or capacitor?

Yup. The trick is the chip on the board is a bit difficult to solder even with a hot air rework unit like my aoyue 968. Takes time. There is a FQDN type chip with little legs that might fit; that would be way way way easier to put on the board I think.

Someday I'll try that when I do another one. But replacing that chip alone fixed my unit which came from the UK and had the same screwup yours appears to.
