Hi all,

Just started with Bitcoin this week... I've been thinking about mining, but, don't have the funds to buy a rig. Is it at all possible to mine with a PC? I have a top of the line CPU and an upper tier GPU but I know they won't compare to a dedicated rig. I've heard some mention of using a p2pool distributed system. That seems doable with a basic system and tempered expectations, but, I have no idea where to begin.Thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

well really the only way to mine btc now is with asic's from butterfly labs. A lot of people are pushing towards the alt coins which use a different algorithm which so far there is no specialized hardware for.

If you are looking to find out more about alt coins (some are even cpu based!) check the altcoin forms here.

Hello & Welcome to btc.
Yeah GPU or CPU mining for BTC is not the thing to do. Not unless you want to do it for fun? Don't forget the power bill will go up in cost. You won't be making much, like pennies a week. Serious, my OC intel 4ghz, 2x650ti & a 470gtx only doing 220mhs mining which is about .34 cents a week. Now that's a joke. The ASIC miners are about the only way to go. There $$$$$ pricey! Remember this, only the people who sell the shovles in a Gold Rush are making money hand over fist...

You should switch to some scrypt currencies, because mining BTC with GPU now is NOT so profitable as mining for example NovaCoin.
