I was thinking about mining HBN and DOGE.  Are there any others that a newbie can grab.  What are some of the trustworthy pools?

I'd start with mining LiteCoins, it's the most popular scrypt coin out there atm and is quite profitable and steady.

It is the best to mine a scrypt coin if you have a decent GPU. Litecoin is by far the most supported scrypt coin and has plenty of mining options.

If you feel that your GPU isn't good enough (around 200 khash/s or less), it is a good idea to think of CPU coins, like Primecoin.

LTC seems to be most stable now from scrypt based cryptos. You can find pool comparison here https://litecoin.info/Mining_pool_comparison , but don't forget to calculate mining profitability. You can find mining calculator at http://cryptoviz.com/calculator.html .

+1 for that coinwarz link but i think its important to mine coins you believe in foremost.

on top of everything take your hashing power into account and if solo mining is practical, i would suggest it. the coin you mine becomes more robust having multiple servers running vs a few very large pools.

weigh that against diff and value/marketcap.. i am sure you will make an appropriate choice.

Dogecoin is a good place to get your feet wet. Check out coinmarketcap and see which coins have gained the most recently.

I would suggest Dogecoins. Easy to mine, have some value and the community is great and will help you out.
