It could be a huge competitor in the crypto-market. If I'm not mistaken, it is the first altcoin to be Scrypt-ASIC resistant, and that could prove to be very valuable.

ASIC-resistant is something that only miners care about. Users don't care about it one bit. Nobody is going to start using vertcoin because it is ASIC-resistant and nobody is going to stop using Bitcoin because it is mined with ASICs.

Anyway, even if Bitcoin were ASIC-resistant, it would not change how much you could mine in the end because there would be millions of CPUs mining and you would still be just a tiny fraction.
