I just got my 7990 and have only had it up and running for about 10-20 minutes, however one of the GPUs nearly instantly seems to be climbing to 98-99C, and each time it's got that high I have turned off CGminer as I'm worried I might fry the card the first day I have it. It's hit 100C a few times.
Before I start fiddling with the figures and try and make it run a bit slower, is hovering around the 95-99C mark ok for a GPU? It's just so much higher than my previous one I am not sure of the risks involved in running it so hot. Are we talking complete hardware failure as an eventuality by running it too high, or do these cards have a built in function to stop them getting damaged from overheating?

Did you undervolt? Fans on 100%? Case or open rig? Additional fans to cool the rig? Ambient temperature?
They will endure 99°C but I don't recommend it.

I don't think you have anything to be concerned about.
Just want to know, have you plugged the 7990 straight onto the motherboard or are using a riser cable. are you mining sha256 or scrypt coins, im guessing scrypt coins due to the temps.
well ive had my 2 x 7990 for a month now, one of my cards use to reach 110 degrees I was concerned about this a lot, but it seems these cards can handle the heat, but wouldn't recommend it.
you will definitely need to under-volt your 7990 to get lower temps. as everyone's setup is different you will need to find your optimal setting for your card, now my 7990's don't go above 85 degress.
hope this helps you

Did you undervolt? I'm just downloading MSIafterburner beta so I can change the core voltage and lower it a bit. That's what you mean by undervolt, right? Fans on 100%? Yup. Case or open rig? Its a case but I always keep the side panel off as im always adding and taking things out. Additional fans to cool the rig? Nope nice idea though I might target a desktop fan at it from the outside Ambient temperature? ~20C

Thanks that's reassuring. I'll probably leave this one as it is overnight now as its level at ~98 then try to lower the core voltage tomorrow. Lowering -I from 13 to 12 drops it down to 800mh/s, so is not really practical if I want to mine the max amount. It's plugged into the motherboard, and yes mining scrypt. Getting at least 650mh/s out of each at it's current rate, so 1300 in total. Anyone else get imperfections on their monitor when it's running full whack too? I'm currently getting pixelated boxes popping up randomly all over until I move a window around.

Also take cold air in at the bottom front of the rig and blow it out at the end. 7990 and 650 khash? According to mining hardware comparison you should get way above 1000.

99c is not good underclock it with msi afterburner or it will not last 1300 kh for litecoin is good for that card

you probably got the core clock or the memory clock to high if your getting screen pixilation.
these are my settings for 2.4MH for 2 x 7990 you may need to tweak it for your system
core voltage : 1075 core clock: 985 memory clock 1360
3 gpu's at intensity 20 and 1 gpu intensity 13
and make sure on msi afternurner you create a fan profile.
Oh by way, msi allows you to change the thermal paste without voiding your warranty. use a thermal compound like the artic mx2, mx3 or mx4. and you will need TIM cleaner. If you do not feel comfortable in doing this, then don't attempt this.
I had also changed the thermal paste on both my 7990's

Dude.... If you're fan is at 100% and intensity is only 13 and not OC, reaching 99c IS NOT okay. If it's a new card, it might be defective or the thermal paste is fucked up.
My R9 290 is at fan 70%, intensity 20, OC'd and temps only reach 90.

A 7990 is two 7970s on one card and they run damn hot. You can't compare that to a single GPU card. They're really not something I'd buy for mining.

I had one for 6 months I paid 800 usd or it. i earned 600 usd with it and I sold it for 650 to someone that wanted to use it to mine lite coins. I mined btc with it from nov 2012 up to may 2013 weather got hot in may so I got rid of it and I was not mining for lite coins at the time.

Good news, after rebooting and changing my main clock from 1200V to 1100 volts neither of the graphics cards goes over 90C, the average is 85C (depending on the time of day and relevant heat) I am curious, not being someone who has really fiddled about with the settings on a GPU before, can I still keep lowering my core voltage for a lower temperature for minimal mh/s loss? Just when I reduced it from 1200V to 1100V I got no reduction in mh/s, in fact if anything it went up and my average is now 1400 mh/s! Don't want to decrease it too low in case it fails to boot into my OS =/ Also, I've been getting odd pixelation effects in my browser when running it at full, with the full intensity at 13 (I -13) in cgminer, I assume this is expected when you are pretty much maxing out your GPU?

^ that screen capture is the very worst I've ever had, it's usually much much milder than that, with just a few squiffy pixels in task bars until a window is moved ...

Try lowering it step by step until your GPU crashes. Then you know how much is needed. If you're flashing your BIOS always remember to keep the original one somewhere. BTW you should keep track of WU and HW instead of your hashing rate alone. WU is the hash rate which gets accepted by the pool.
Yes, those pixels are normal. Better not use it while mining or reduce the Intensity while you want to use it.

yes they will burn up f u run them at that temperatutre 24/7 .. you need to adjust your fans using msi afterburner .. u can get the heat down to mid 70's or 80's ..

Thats way too hot.
I have 2x 7990 (GigaByte) and my GPUs sit at 72-75 degrees. 65% fan speed. 690 kh\s per GPU
undervolt to 1.040 stock speeds

I have 2 x 7990s.
I get 2800 MH/s.
Only got 2100 MH/s for the first 2 weeks, then my son did something to get the 2800 MH/s. If you're interested I can ask him what he did. He is watching a film just now.
