An article on the Telegraph says that the head of the Environment Agency is warning England of the need for personal water targets. In particular, people should take showers instead of baths. They are urged to use less water and companies are asked to curbed leaks in order to to prevent future shortages and damage to rivers and wildlife. Apparently, many of their sources of water supplies are already overstretched. Couple that with a growing population and climate change, much of England could face supply shortages by the 2050

Wake up, people! We should all be afraid of our resources depleting. It’s not just drought, but food and clean air as well.

What if the time comes when we’re asked to not even take showers anymore?

Thanks for this information. In third world countries, families usually take baths because it is cheaper than showers.

We use showers at home and it is truly more environment friendly that bath. It is very alarming to know that there will come a time that showers will be available once or twice a week/month because we don't know how to preserve our water resources.

The problem with this is that people don't actually consider what their water consumption is when taking a shower.

You have to take into account what the flow rate of the shower head is and make sure that you limit the time you are in the shower for. There are a ton of ways to cut down on the water usage in a home if you are willing to put in a few reduction measures.

One of my favorites is using the grey water from the sink to fill the toilet bowl for flushing. You can also put in the dual flush systems that regulate the amount used for different "needs".

In regards to the shower one I remember using mostly due to lack of hot water sometimes was taking the "navy shower".

Now a days i think people take more showers. only because newer apartments don't have baths, they have showers to save space. Families on the other hand would need baths for their kids.

If you have a very water hungry shower it might use the same amount of water as a bath. Just try to close the water outlet and take a shower to proof yuorself what works better.

71 percent of our Earth is covered in water and it's a bit funny for some people that we are having a problem on water, since it is 71 percent but no. Yes, it is 71 percent but in that 71 percent, 96 percent are ocean waters, it is not fresh and only almost 3 percent of fresh water.

We need to conserve our resources especially water since every living thing needs it. We humans, are also mostly water, we need it. We must take care of our sorroundings the way we take ourselves.

We might see this issue as something not worth arguing but a large thing is compose of those small things. Simply put, we should start with the small things to make a big difference. If science believes that shower can minimize the use of water, then why not follow it. It is alarming how our natural resources gradually depletes. Even clean air is now an issue. So what we can do is to start with small things. Start with planting, recycling, saving water and even switching to shower because that small start would eventually be a big thing if we start it right now. We are aiming for a change so we have to start to discipline ourselves and start following this little step to conserve and preserve our resources.

From my personal experience, it's very possible to save a lot of water by doing simple things.
As gross as it may sound: when you wake up in the middle of the night to pee - don't flush. Contrary to popular belief, it won't stink by the morning, and if you do (or rather don't do it) daily - it will save over 1 TON (!!!) of clean water per year per person (6 liters per flush*365 days).
And food consumerism if the worst: western society throws away so much food - it's enough to feel every hungry person in the world. So just don't buy more until you finish what you already have...

I'm not European but thanks for this information, I was not aware of this.

People from all over the world, not just Europe, should be aware of this news. This affects not only the UK but will eventually affect all of humanity. I guess some of us are still too ignorant about such issues but this must be a wake up call.

We're slowly killing the earth and fewer things are being done to address it. Save natural resources!

In my opinion water will be one of the most expensive goods on earth in the future. Big companies like Nestle are already starting to buy sources of fresh water eg. in the Austrian alps.

saving water is only one of our problems, of course the more you save the better. but for big families or even families with kids baths are inevitable

You can only appreciate the importance of one thing until it is gone. Water supply here in our place is already scarce. We had to save water as much as possible. Water sources has been damaged and rivers became polluted because of the lack of discipline of the people. People throwing garbage here and there. We have to wake up and realize that mother Earth is deteriorating and in need of our help.

With extreme cold temperatures, taking a bath is not a good idea even when you are bathing hot water because it is going to open up your skin pores and that will cause lot of health problems.

People need to realize that there is special soap for bathing in salt water. I mean, Britain is surrounded by saltwater all over the place. Save the fresh water for drinking and cooking.
