Try mining darkcoin, its far more complicated to process then Bitcoin.    That means your computer has the upperhand and there is no ASIC
Its about the most popular complex coin I can think of now

You're off-topic here, but I'll try.

If you want to mine scrypt, forget GPU and buy ASIC.
If you want to stick with ASIC-resistant algo like X11, try a rig with a few NVIDIA 750Ti. They eat a lot less power than AMD.

Better start your own topic than stretching this here.

I must say that you have taken a wrong decision. You are going to waste your electricity. Now mining become less profitable and with a normal PC it is almost impossible. You can it for mining. Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs) are specifically designed to do just one thing: mine bitcoins at mind-crushing speeds, with relatively low power consumption.

Yes do not mine LTC on a cpu, its just not feasible now.   They have designed specialised hardware for that purpose.

more then 4x harder in 6 months and the price has been dropping all this year.   So costs more, worth less.  Not a market to start out on

How come coins need to be mined?

How did you end up on this forum?

Actually its possible for a coin network with no mining.   I didnt think so previously but they do operate now.    How well they work is subject to argument but so far Ive tried its worked fine.    The problem is all new coins are just tokens with very little worth.
Most people only ask these question because they want to get rich, short answer is no easy way to mine high worth coins now sorry

If you are here out of interest then check out energy coin, you just have to leave the laptop open and connected to the internet and thats it.  No mining, new coins are distributed to holders who form the network.     We'll see one day which is best, some say its all waste but one route should be best and it probably wont be running gpu maxed out 24/7 imo

What are you mining? If you're mining Bitcoins, just stop and start mining some CPU-only coins or X11 coins.

You can mine mine some "cpu only" coins like Quazar, Quark or Memory. But with single CPU it would be very hard to profit.

If he using the computer anyway then its no problem to have it in the background gaining some shares on a pool and eventually some coins.  Its not a big deal and a single cpu wont make you anything much.

back when a cpu could mine bitcoin and I tried it briefly, nobody was going wow really because the coins werent worth anything. So you have the same scenario now with cpu coins but who knows where they could go.  darkcoin like I mentioned above is getting more demand apparently, Im not tempted to sell it especially though its good to read the various competing features and you can always swap to btc if you like

Quark did spike, about a dollars worth went to over 50.   Not sure now but its well known still, it could propagate further but mining is over mostly for it I think

For CPU mining, Fantomcoin and Bytecoin are good.

Comparison of Privacy-Centric Coins: https://moneroforcash.com/monero-vs-dash-vs-zcash-vs-bitcoinmixers.php also includes Verge and Pivx

yes you could mine with normal PC but you won't be able to make profit with normal PC.
Best way to mine is ASIC Bitcoin Miner.

How to Start Mining cryptocoins on computer?
It is really easy now.
First, decide what you should mine.
Visit this site http://dustcoin.com/mining to check what is more profitable now.
Important scrypt (like litecoins) is 1000 more complex than SHA-256 (like Bitcoin) – be careful
Currencies change very quickly – check it from time to time
Compare speed of different hardware:
Here you can find the info about speed for mining scrypt coins (like litecoins ) https://litecoin.info/Mining_hardware_comparison
And from https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mining_hardware_comparison find info for mining SHA-256 like Bitcoin

After you compared and chose coins and hardware,
Download initial software for your coins. It include wallet, and you can create yours then.
Find and select the pool, where you will mine.
NOTE! Mining on your own affordable only, if you have really heavy hardware, if not then it is better to connect existing pool. List for litecoins pools - https://litecoin.info/Mining_pool_comparison

Register  your own id on selected pool
Create worker! (After your ID you could create lots of workers, normally one worker for each PC, so you need at least one)

Select software for mining.
There are lots of different software depending on coin,  hardware,  pools, operating systems and etc.
I recommend GUI Miner script http://sourceforge.net/projects/guiminerscript/ as it for Windows based on cgminer, cudaminer and reaper
Already included setting for popular litecoin pools, has settings for AMD Radeon videocards

What to do with coins?
Buy goods or exchange them into money

Go to https://www.cryptsy.com for exchanging from different coins to Bitcoins or Litecoins, then go to Mr. Gox or btc-e to exchange them into real money.
Have a nice BTC

Nice Welcoming and meaningful Guide for him...Thanks

except it doesnt tell him the most important part...that he will be wasting money in power......
