While it is very easy to say that bitcoin is a force for good, the purpose of this journey is to go and see whether bitcoin could be useful for the people on the ground in Kenya. If we find out that it is not as simple as some may think, we want to document our attempt, and perhaps allow for entrepreneurship innovation.

Richard's there. They are having first ever Nairobi meetup tomorrow, in a local Cafe. A bigger meetup in the Nairobi, start-up hub is scheduled for March 5th. Richard has been staying with the guys in IcrossInternational. I've seen a few photos on London Bitcoin Meetup (Facebook).

I hadn't heard about this initiative until now and think it's great! I'd love to hear more about how it can directly help those in need.

I know that if Westerners would simply donate to a general Bitcoin address (and thus going through the hassle of fees themselves instead of seeing Kenyans on their end having to deal with it) and then having an organization spread those coins to individual addresses of people in need, it could really help in not seeing donations bogged down by countless fees.

This is a great project; however I must caution that it is vital that the tablets are not infected with DRM as is the case with the iPad or Windows 8.x RT tablets. This is critical because otherwise the project can end up spending all these resources helping people and organizations in Kenya to use Bitcoin only to have a western based multinational pull the rug from under it all. The best example of this is the recent decision by Apple to use the DRM in IOS devices in order to censor Bitcoin by removing the blockchain.info application from the app store.

If a tablet requires that all of its software be only obtained from an "approved" and censored app store as is the case with the IOS and Windows 8.x tablets then there is a very high risk the entire effort could end up being wasted.
