Hi

Well here's the deal.
I recently built a rig with the following (relevant) specs:

Gigabyte SKT-1155 Z77X-UD3H Motherboard (shorted pins A1 and B17 on PCIEX8 slot)
Intel Celeron G1610 2.6GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - OEM
850W SilverStone Strider Gold ST85F-G Evolution, 91% Eff', 80PLUS GOLD, EPS 12V, Silent Fan, ATX v2.3, PSU [powers MoBo, CPU + 2GPUs]
2x XFX Black Series 750W PSUs [power 2 GPUs each]
Kingston 1600MHz DDR3 Non ECC CL9 4GB Kit (2x 2GB) HyperX BLU DIMM Memory Module
6x Asus Radeon R9 280X DirectCUII TOP 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
6x PCI Express Extension Cable: 1x to 16x Powered Risers / Molex
Windows 8.1 OEM

So here we go. CGminer v3.7.2 will only mine with 5 cards.

- If I plug my monitor into the primary PCIE slot and dummy plug all the other cards, Windows recognises all 6 cards, but only 5 monitors (4 Generic non-pnp monitors and 1 generic pnp monitor). If I right-click to change "screen resolution", the 6th monitor appears in black and I'm unable to activate it or extend the desktop to it. It just says "unable to save display settings". CGminer will throw out this error: "Failed to ADL_Adapter_ID_Get. Error -1" and only mine on 5 GPUs.

- If I do not dummy plug any monitor, device manager will show one of the 6 GPUs with an exclamation mark /!\ in front (on PCI Bus 6, allegedly). CGMiner will show the same error and mine on 5 GPUs.

I'm using the 13.11 beta Catalysts. The latest 13.12's wouldn't even get Windows to recognise more than 4 GPUs without /!\.

0.025 BTC to the one who manages to get my CGMiner to work with all 6 GPUs on Win 8.1.

-----Manually uninstall the amd drivers:

2 pages:
http://www.brightsideofnews.com/news/2012/4/4/guide-how-to-completely-uninstall-amd-graphics-drivers.aspx?pageid=0

------ Install Catalyst 13.1 downloaded from techpowerup. I have seen it mentioned that it must be downlaoded from here.

I read these modified drivers from Techpowerup only work for old 7xxx cards, not the new R9's.

I guess that would explain why I had issues with them myself. I would still try to manually uninstall and install the 12.6 drivers or something like that.

With windows 8 you shouldn't be having these problems so it must be a driver issue.

I tried the latest drivers and now the 13.11beta. Anything much older makes no sense as it won't support the R9's.

I do believe it's a driver limitation and I don't believe any drivers out there currently do the job.

If anyone managed to create modified drivers or some advanced registry hack we might have a chance...

i built three different rigs for now, many times i saw "Failed to ADL_Adapter_ID_Get. Error -1" error which is pretty annoying.

what i can suggest is to start from scratch with win7 as this i can manage to do many things without even dummy plugs with win7. stick with 13.11beta and sdk 2.9.

install and configure (update as you want, shutdown power management etc. etc.), install all needed programs (like gpu-z, msi etc) except drivers, btw use only one gpu plugged in. then, create a restore point here.

afterwards, install sdk and driver, power up and see that "cgminer -n" is ok. then one by one plug all the remaining gpus.

That's pretty much exactly what I've done (but in Win 8.1).
Are you running 6 R9's under Windows, Neter?
As said, 5 gpus also work without dummy plugs but I get a /!\ on the 6th.

nope, worse i tried to manage 2x7990 + R9 280x + 7950 on the same rig Wink

"from scratch" approach is to eliminate the mess up's you can accidentally do, and you can always get back to starting point with the created restore point. like ive said, you shouldnt insist on your current setup, but to start from the beginning. my pref is to go with win7, but win8 is up to you.

i know that it doesn't make sense to get that "-1" error but there are many ways to get that error, doesnt automatically means that you only have not working opencl.

heres my 2 cents. get a USB flash drive, Write the "BAMT"(linux distro) onto it( super easy) and then boot off of it.

dont use windows for mining Tongue

it has built in CG miner and all the drivers, all you need to do is configure it with the parameters and BAM! super effecient miners activated Grin

While you have a mix of cards, I do not think that a rig of 4 is comparable to 6. I can get 4 cards running no prob. I can even get 5 cards running fine. It's just with the 6th that shit hits the fan.

I might actually consider that BAMT thing. Is it purely running from the USB drive? Does it recognise 6 GPUs easily? Does it require much Linux knowledge to run (I have none...)? And does it have the latest mobo chipset drivers and Cats on it or should these still be installed somehow?

Also, for 6 x 280x 13.1 from techpowerup should work, since 280x=7970, cards will be detected as 7970 by the driver.

And windows8 drivers, the ones it gets from auto update, just work ; )
At least now they work, m$ have 13.12 version which differs from amd 13.12 in almost the same way as 13.1 from techpowerup differs from 13.1 from amd.

So far, it looks like its not the limitation per ce, but has something to do with the cards trying to init too much displays or something like that, making either win or the driver itself mad or unable to find some free resources.

I think the 13.1 drivers where the last AMD drivers that allow more than 5 GPUs per rig, I used the 13.1 with 5x R7950s using a UD5 mainboard.

12.6 are the only driver from AMD that allow more than 5 GPUs, at least ~recent driver.
13.1 from AMD does not work for 6+GPUs.
13.1 from TechPowerup works for 6 x 6950/6970/7950/7970/280x cards.
13.12 W8.1 from Microsoft works(at least at the time of the post) for 6 x 290/290x, that's the driver Windows installs automatically.
13.12 mod v3 works for 7 x 290 confirmed on W8.1 so far.

OS: windows 8.1 , uninstall amd drivers then restart. use DDU to clean up registry keys then reboot. attach all GPU on the board, don't use dummy plug. once the exclamation sign is present on all 6 cards,  install amd catalyst 13.1 from techpowerup, finally, install amd app sdk v2.8.
