Hey all, what is the most recommended wallet for bitcoin? I've heard it's not good to store your bitcoin in online wallets as you risk losing what you store there.

I've also seen the main bitcoin wallet, but it seems like it takes a while to download everything before you can use it? But is it the safest?

Are there others that would be just as good?

Sorry for such a basic question, and if this isn't in the right forum section. I have a lot to learn yet. Lol

The Bitcoin network protocol was designed to be extremely flexible. It can be used to create timed transactions, escrow transactions, multi-signature transactions, etc. The current features of the client only hint at what will be possible in the future.

You can lose your coins whether online offline or on your computer if you're not careful. Blockchain.info is very safe and especially a good starting point for beginners. Just make sure you set up all the security features it has.

You can download a wallet that doesn't download the blockhain if you want a quicker/smaller wallet like Electrum: https://electrum.org/

I think I like the idea of keeping it on my computer instead of in an online wallet. Just something about trusting other people with my money makes me uncomfortable. Lol But I have heard of the blockchain wallet before. Is that like the official blockchain? So maybe more reliable?  Huh

 I'll look into electrum. Thanks!

It's separate from the actual Bitcoin blockchain, and not the official online wallet as there is no official one, but it's as good as. Try the demo account feature there or just create one to have a play around with.

It looks pretty easy to use. Maybe there would be reason to have both an online and offline wallet. Thanks for the suggestions!

Some people use an online wallet as their current/spending account and a offline or computer wallet as their savings.

I'm not too clued up with all of the wallets out there and their features, but I am a user of blockchain.info and I'm very please with what it has to offer. Despite its security, the number one security feature is always yourself and any other person that interacts with your machine.

Although I haven't done this yet, cold storage is a good option for longer term holdings. The security of this is that you aren't accessing your wallet every day. You can still check up on the balance via the blockchain too. Of course, the security comes into play in how you produce this wallet, and how you interact with it when you choose to spend coins.

I am liking the blockchain wallet. I haven't done many (any) bitcoin transactions yet, but it looks like the blockchain wallet would be pretty easy to use. I'm just afraid of finally getting some bitcoin and losing it because I don't really know what I'm doing. Lol

I'm thinking a local wallet and an online wallet are a good way to go. I like that I can access my blockchain wallet from wherever I am if I need it.

What do you mean security comes into play in how the wallet is produced and how you interact with it? Do you mean like the computer I'm using, and if it is secure on that end?
