Hi guys,

If you feel like reading please refer to the LONG version; otherwise I would appreciate an answer to the SHORT yet central question of this topic.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
LONG: As you can easily spot i am a newbie in the cryptocurrecy realm, and -- as the newbie tradition goes -- well packed with a bunch, if not, a deluge of questions. Anyhow, I've been researching on the trading platforms and came up with btc-e.com in the lead. It seems clean and to the point and, in theory with less incentive to "hula-hoop" away on one random day Tongue
And though they don't require docs(proof of identity) right away it seems that it is asked for once you start doing transactions. Yet, I don't feel comfortable sharing my papers with them, especially  those most sought after by id thieves (ex. passport). On the other hand i can live with sending them smth less official, but still proving that me is me or I is I.
So I was wondering about the kind of documents they would accept as proof of id and I would appreciate you could share your experience on this matter in particular and on btc-e in general.
 I've noticed that people post here very often when they run into truble with the service, but since I see a lot of activity on the btc-e web page i reckon there must be smth working right on their side. So basically I looking for a balanced story of this service.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

SHORT: What proof of ID did btc-e ask from you and at what point in your activity?

Thx a bunch.

Short: BTC-E doesn't ask for your ID.
And yes, you should have posted your questions somewhere else.

They ask for IDs to be "unfrozen", necessary to withdraw BTC within a month or so after your first purchase.

I trade on BTC-E and yes they actually "freeze" your account after you registered it for 72 or so hours. But then you are free to do whatever you want without any problems. Also your account "freezes" whenever you change your password.

But they never ask for your ID. If someone has PMed you on btc-e and asked for your ID I would assume him to be scam.

For the OP: just find BTC-E thread and post your question there.

For me it was necessary to submit ID to be unfrozen to withdraw within a month if you purchase by the wire transferred deposit as explained below. I don't think I was scammed. As far as you wait for a month, you may not need ID though.

These are from the support via ticket (hdbtce.kayako.com).

----
Depositing money through the wire transfer. The time of the hold is from 1 month. It can be removed by providing your IDs through the ticket.
----

----
Our bank ask you provide a copy of you ID and utility bill or bank statement (with your name and place of residence) not more than 3 months old in high res quality (>300DPI, colorful) due to high fraud activity.

1 - Write your full name here!
2 - All documents must have an English translation !
3 - All documents must be scanned (not photographed, uncut, not painted up).
4 - After checking our financial department, your account will be unlocked automatically.
5 - Verification of documents and cancel hold account can take several days.

Attach here (JPG, PDF no more 2mb size).

I withdrew $10k last summer, no id required - just destination bank details.

I've never sent them any money but I can understand why they're protecting against fraudulent deposits - they'd be nuts not to.

Of course. I assume they would ask you for ID only if you deposit. If you withdraw there shouldn't be any problem.

Thx for replies, and sorry if some people were offended by my posting this question under the "Service Discussion" -- I've seen a lot of of posts on trading platforms in this section and therefore thought it appropriate.
Once I get a better mapping of the forum I expect to do a better job on it

And just to clarify, BTC-e does not ask directly and immediately for an ID -- or rather proof of it -- but it does have a clause ( already mentionned by one of the contributors) that it might do so if the bank requires or, i guess, for some other reason, cause one cannot know; hence the ambiguity and my interest to get an idea about how often and what type of proof BTC-e needs.

So, for people that did not provide yet a proof of ID, you might wake up one day with such a request. I, for one, don't wanna wake up in a situation when BTC-e can request any type of proof just because they hold several thousand $ of mine. And btw, i am talking here about Fiat currency  <--> Cryptocurrency type of transfers. I don't expect 2 get any such request in case of Cryptocurrency <--> Cryptocurrency.
