Don't be stupid. Large companies holding on to the coins right now would be idiotic. The economy just isn't there yet. They need to pay their suppliers in dollars, for now. And yes it still counts as accepting bitcoin. What Overstock/TD does with the coins is irrelevent. To the consumer the transaction is already
done. All their goods are available for purchase with bitcoin. This is an amazing first step. What is your country doing?
Yea, its right that consumers now could buy many things with btc, and this is great.
About my country, which calls itself the most technically-gifted of the world - we do nothing. The best you can buy here with btc are pizza and t-shirts.
