Is it possible to turn off Hardware acceleration in CCC? I'd like to be able to use my computer while mining at a high intensity. The option in Windows is grayed out for me.

try to add the following line on the bat file of cgminer:

setx GPU_MAX_ALLOC_PERCENT 80

modify the 80 to the highest value you can get your machine usable

pd: 100 max

Thanks for the suggestion, I had that line at 100 previously, changed it to 80 then 50 and my PC is still unusable. My hashrate never even dropped. I'm using 290s.

If I remote from my laptop it's usuable, I'm assuming because there is no GPU acceleration, but right now it is not unless I lower the intensity.

EDIT: I'm running 3 290s and 1 7970 on this rig. I know with just the 7970 hashing my PC is usable (because intensity is 13). If I video out from the 7970 instead of my 290 will it help? I haven't had time to test today, but I know disabling my current GPU and keeping the other 290s mining didn't help do it doesn't seem likely.

I have no direct answer, but a few ideas on how to mitigate/improve.

load msconfig.exe and configure boot with vga video. Reboot to see if it does what you ask, even if you only have 640x480 for now.
Play with --gpu-dyninterval on miner config
Use CGWatcher.exe to adjust the intensity, depending if the system is idle or not.

I remember bitminter was very responsive, even mining BTC on the GPU. Perhaps it has to do with video memory being busy with scrypt coins

In the cgminer readme it says the default intensity is 'd' for desktop interactive performance. Try setting the intensity of the card you use for your monitor to 'd'.

With my settings every card under I=14 is usable

If you have an iGpu maybe consider that as an option too?

EDIT:

dunno about you, but when scrypt with d my hashrate drops to 10-25% while at 13 desktop is usable and mining at least 80%

Well you can try getting the video out the 7xxx. I have an old system that when i put a 6950, which has the vid out, at intensity 19 it became unusable. It may work for you.

Never actually tried it, since I am not mining on my main desktop...

Well video out on the 7970 did make it usable, though I still wish there was a way to turn off hardware acceleration. Using the desktop causes the hashrate to drop by over a 100. Can't fit another GPU on this rig because of my case unless I dismantle everything. I guess I'll do what I've been doing for the past 2 months, use my laptop. Though now I guess if I need to code I can use my desktop for that.

if your'e in windows 7 turn off Aero and the eyecandy:

Start button>Control Panel>System and Maintenance>Performance Information and Tools>Adjust visual effects>Visual Effects tab>Adjust for best performance>OK.

see windows makes everything so simple and straighforward!

Thanks, that was exactly what I was looking for!

For anyone else who was a bit confused on where to go, try this:

Start > Right click "My Computer" > Properties > Advanced System Settings > Advanced Tab > Performance Options

Then you should see the screen.

Thanks again!
