Reading about Ethereum brought up a question -  is ERC20 Token rather a smart contract or a DAPP? Or it can be either one or the other, depending of the token? Thanks!

It is neither. A token is a token, a smart contract is a smart contract and a DAPP is a DAPP.
It is like asking if a dog is rather a bird or a camel. It is a dog.

However, it is created by a smart contract, therefore one could consider it closer to a smart contract in this sense, however it remains a separate concept.

Hope it helped clarify the issue!

ERC20 Token is a type of token (using a type of algo). There are other coins / tokens with other algo such as Cryptonote, SHA256 etc.

Hence do not be confused about it. EOS just came out its own platform so we should new new type of token with another algo coming soon
