There are several different types of Bitcoin clients. The most secure are full nodes like Bitcoin Core, but full nodes are more resource-heavy, and they must do a lengthy initial syncing process. As a result, lightweight clients with somewhat less security are commonly used.

Make an account on coinotron.com or similar pool, download pooler's cpu miner and configure it to mine ltc on coinotron with your worker id. Google for detailed steps. Imho it.gd pointless anyway. Each of my hd 7950 mine about .4 ltc a day you'll make 50 times less on a cpu. you can invest in gpu or just buy and trade.

Download 50BTC miner. It has a nice interface and is easy to setup. Play with the options and you should be mining Liteys in no time.

kathi,
You in Chennai right, goto that street where you get all computer stuff. Find a second shop for GPU's. Check Mining hardware specs for litecoin...google it. Pick up some second hand GPU's. It might turn out to be worthwhile. CPU mining would be just for the sake of it and mostly meaning less now.
cheers anyways.
