just in case your help is needed
prepare commands that the end user could copy/paste to his ubuntu terminal
- open a ssh tunnel for you to login and setup the mining operation
- do it in a shared screen so that s/he knows what you're doing (real time visual check what you're typing etc.)

i think this is what the reward is for, that someone does the actual troubleshooting and application of the known procedure
to make it work.

Things have taken a turn for the worse and now Ubuntu won't boot up.

I'm looking for someone who can install Linux, and get a miner going on this box if I mail you the drive.  I'm looking to plug n play.

I did try your guide... it was going o.k. until I rebooted.  Linux tries to start, then restarts, restarts, etc.

Ship it to me. I'll do the job right this time. I should of asked for a day or two to install the software. I'll pay shipping back and forth.

I'll see if there are any Ontario bids first... shipping across the border seems to take forever.

Since I don't know what you've done to the machine I can't say if it can be resurrected or not, but I haven't yet found a Linux-machine that I haven't been able to bring back, except for HW-faults or when they've deleted all data (or encrypted and lost the key).
Granted it's much easier if you're sitting next to the machine, but it should be possible to do remote.
I have 10yrs of high-performance unix/linux experience so I'm not trying to decieve you here.

Here's my suggestion.
Get someone to fix/reinstall your machine.
Have them write down EXACTLY what they're doing. Step by step.
Have someone else review those instructions so that they don't do anything malicious.
Follow those instructions and reinstall the machine yourself.

At the end of the day you'll have a functional machine with no backdoors. :-)

You'd have to open port 22 for it to work.
Or do some port forwarding if it's an external fw. Ideally forward port 34235 to port 22 on the machine to avoid a few automated attacks.

Atlas don't worry, if we were in the same state I'd send it to you.  But things seem to get held up crossing borders, and the Cdn government wants their 13% when it crosses too.

We did try this, from 2 or 3 angles, and were unable to make a connection.  Maybe the modem is the problem?

Nope, nothing wrong with his firewall. His router was, presumably, set up correctly. openSSH was configured correctly.

I have no idea why it doesn't accept connections...

Hmm... sounds like a hardware issue to me. Have you tried holding down shift and testing your ram or booting into single user mode?

If it was a hardware issue, it wouldn't even POST. Clearly if he's getting into Linux, there's nothing wrong with the hardware.
