Hi,
I'm very new to Crypto and have been playing around with the alt coins.
I've made some nice profits on some of my dealings so far, at the moment my profits in Bitcoins are stored on Cryptsy. I'm holding quite some profits also in alts such as DOGE and MOON.
Is this safe to store bitcoins on Cryptsy? If not, should I just download a standard bitcoin wallet as i've heard it needs 15GB download? Is there something else I can do to store my Bitcoins safely?
Thank you!
Cfx.

It's not ideal to store them at exchanges. If you download a Bitcoin wallet like Electrum that doesn't download the blockchain, or you can store them online on blockchain.info which is pretty secure if you set up all the security features. You can also store them on paper wallets or just the wallet.dat files.

Ah, will look at that one.
I've had MultiBit recommended, is that considered safe? I run Mac OS.

Wallets are generally only as safe as you are to be honest.

Well to be safe, i'll install the one listed at the top of this forum....
News: Bitcoin 0.8.6 is now available. Download.
It's going to take a while, but I guess this is safest and I can backup wallet.dat etc just like my other coins!

What if someone put up a malicious link on this forum? ![Grin](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/grin.gif) Is downloading the whole blockchain a problem? If it is I'd go for another wallet or set up one on blockchain.info.

Why not use CoinBase?
The user experience is peerless, the security is solid, and the convenience of access is great.
Remember that time is money; if you spend 20 hours on your own, intricate cold storage solution, that's 20 hours you didn't spend making more money.
Cryptsy is probably fine for small amounts of alt coints but I wouldn't use it as a long-term solution for large amounts.

I would recommend storing them in an offline wallet and use it from a usb stick , every time you want to do a transaction.

For general users, I believe Multibit, Electrum and blockchain.info with 2FA are good enough. Of course, you should make backups to the seed or wallet, and put up some encryption with good password.
If you have a lot of bitcoin, maybe you should use offline wallet or paper wallet.
