I get a lot of hardware errors, and there's fans pointing right at it?  big deal?

also i get diff 18.4E when trying to solo mine

what coin are you trying to mine?  Block erupters/ASICs can only mine bitcoins/SHA-256 based cryptos?  It can't mine Scrypt based cryptos.
Alternatively it can mine MED (Mediterraneancoin) a coin that uses HybridScryptHash256 and employs CPU and ASICs to mine, at current difficulty you can find a block a day with 1 or 2 BEs.
