To receive merit you do not have to have a specific rank. TryNinja already gave you the answer. To give you some encouragement you may check this... List of members achieved 0 to 100+ meritsAll these people started from 0 merit and they were newbies same like you. So no excuses. Welcome to the forum by the way. I will see you around.

Not exactly true those that registered before the merit system was implemented started at a generic number. Members = 10, Full Member = 100, Sr. Members = 250, Hero members 500, and finally Legendary Members = 1000. Of course, you should be aware of this since you registered in 2013, and started off with 250 merit. Those who register from now on start on 0.

Merit can be given to any member on the forum irrespective of your rank. But the issue is, most newbies usually are not able to make quality posts which can earn them the merits that is why you usually see no merits for them

Do Newbies get merits also through making good posts...
Yes, definitely. I'm currently a newbie and I got 1 merit point (from some generous guy, I think). That's really supportive point which encourages me to overcome this initial challenging stage. Come on, you can do it too.

Now please lock the thread at the bottom-left corner of the page to avoid spam.
And THIS is what happens when you don't lock your thread after getting an answer. 10 Newbies spamming this thread with useless answers. Smh. edit: 2 more

Yes of course anyone can earn merits because you will need them later on to rank up even further. So try and get as many as possible. The sooner the easier it will be to rank up later.

Of course newbies and receive merits. It doesn’t matter what rank you are, as long as good people who appreciated your post puts a merit on your ideas or questions. You can be merited or should we say “respected”.

If a newbie has anything valuable worth sharing and if he can share it in the best possible way then a newbie can definitely get merit points irrespective of his rank. However, in every case, it depends on the reader to call it a valuable post or not. On the other hand, merit feature is introduced recently and hence it will take some time to inculcate the habit of using it frequently so you might not get merit points for your posts now but don't stop sharing your knowledge.
