I am using a gigabyte 280x and a Q6600 on a oldish gigabyte motherboard with a 650w power supply. Currently I have it working at intensity 11. If I raise the intensity to 12 or 13 in cgminer my computer restarts instantly. Have tried putting the higher values in the config and also tried changing to them while mining was active, both fail and reset the computer instantly. I can't work out why this is happening other than maybe my mobo and cpu are too old or my power supply is too weak?
any ideas? As I said, it's working fine (but slowly) on intensity 11.
tried many configs, here is a typical one I use: --scrypt -u XX -p YY -o stratum+tcp://URL --gpu-platform 0 -d 0 -w 256 -v 1 -I 11 -g 2 -l 1 --thread-concurrency 8192
Going crazy trying to solve this...

What's the brand and model of your PSU? How old is it? How many Amperes does it provide on the 12V line? If you undervolt the videocard, you'll increase stability due to lower power consumption and heat, even with a subpar PSU. Further, it will be better at preventing bad things from happening, like damaged components and fire hazard. http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/vbe7-vbios-editor-for-radeon-hd-7000-series-cards.189089/

Power supply is widetech 655 platinum, it's probably about 3 years old? Thanks for the link I will check it out. System doesn't seem to be unstable, it's like a safety switch on my computer triggers and turns the whole thing off as soon as you engage an intensity higher than 11. Can't be temperature related I don't think because it happens so quickly. The shutdown is instant.

I blew a "600" W PSU with a single card. A Corsair 650W handles 2 cards without issues. At least yours shuts down without damage. So far...

Aha, so is it impossible for the CPU, motherboard or RAM to be the bottleneck since all processing is done on the GPU? If so I will just replace the power supply.
Hoping to not have to grab a new motherboard, ram and cpu.

remove g 2 set g 1 (the command "g 2" is used only in a multiple cards rig and with this command max intensity is 13)
"gpu-platform", "v", and "d" value you dont need in bat file with single card.
set this command: --auto-fan and I 13
after that if card work, try to restart improving tc value of 2048, or multiple, r9 280x should start with tc 22528
before setting tc, delete the .bin files on your cgminer folder
my personal tip: try to use sgminer, for me is better than cgminer.
edit: imho it's not a PSU issue. r9 280x work max at 350w and idle of this setup could be under 70w. your 655 platinum is good for run that setup without any issue

How much hash are you getting? If you are getting like 700 or more at intensity 11 than run at that setting.

I saw in a review that Sappire 280X uses 260watt during bitcoin mining.Lets count it 300watt.So you should be able to run 2x280X without trouble on your 850watt psu. I wonder why it restarts at intensity 13.How many hash are you getting from these 2?

I am getting around 300 hashrate which is awful, so I purchased a proper 650w power supply today. I will install and let you guys know the results, in case there are any other internet fellows out there with a similar problem.
Hopefully my house hasn't burned down while I was out.

What do you mean a "proper" 650W PSU. A Corsair VS650, at least?

I bought an Antec 620 HCG. Installed it just now and was able to load intensity 13 without the reset. I have tried to find this info all over the net without success, so hopefully this helps some people with the same problem:
Basically if you upgrade your card on an old system and the power supply can't handle it you will insta-reset, your computer will shut down or restart. The card must be drawing too much power and needs a better power supply.
Let me know if this helped you.

Good brand. Perhaps you could have bought a 850W or a bit above just in case you want to add 1 or 2 cards in the future, but they're more expensive anyway
