I'm thinking of buying this card to mine... for about $130..

Is this a good deal? Or would there be more $ efficient cards?

I think the 5770, 5870, and 5970 all do about the same hashes/$. With the 5870 and 5970 you can put more total hashing power in one computer for a lower total system cost.

If you buying it just for mining I would suggest you carefully check your expected income. If your buying a gpu in that price range for gaming and want to do mining as well the 5770 is a good choice.

I have an existing Geforce 210 card... can I still keep that in my computer for mining as well?

Assuming my motherboard fits two cards... do they have to be same card? I'm a hardware newb

For mining it does not matter if the the cards are different. You can use both a Nvidia card and an ATI card at the same time but having both sets of drivers on your computer can cause some issues.

For gaming performance the more similar the cards the better and you can't use Nvidia and ATI cards together unless you have a motherboard the specifically supports that.

Should I jump into this mining boat headfirst and buy a 5870? Or is the difficulty increasing so fast it won't be worth it to recoup my investment?

Your purchase should depend on the price of the rest of your rig, PSU wattage, likelihood of buying a new rig/new parts and acceptable noise/heat generation levels taken into account.

Recouping your investment isn't assured, but you will offset the devaluation of your hardware over time.

If you buy, buy used, if you buy, don't buy to make $$ only off of bitcoins... If you game then you can buy a nice 5870 or 5770 if you don't have the funds or PSU.

I got a 5770 for $115 for a rig that doesn't have enough PSU power for a second 6950. Overclocks fairly well - have it at 920mhz and still plenty of headroom. Gets 175Mh/sec.

It's a worthwhile upgrade if you are intending to game on your rig, as the 210 is abysmal at that. This also depends on the games you play and at what resolutions you intend to play them. If you're buying it just to mine, ...look at a used card or something
