Charles Lee was asked on the NYDFS public hearing regarding bitcoins about the possible 51% attack on how/why it should be regulated to avoid it. He simply answered that the Government could help protect the network. Is this a possible future vision where governments will invest (with tax payers money) into bitcoin mining? Imagine governments around the world competing in mining and how much value that would bring to bitcoin.

This is quiet possible, especially for countries under dictatorship, e.g. North Korea

I think most btc folks would hate that idea.  But what's to stop them?  There's nothing in the network to stop anyone from mining right?  including big corporations who might see profits.
