Actually ethereum is for long term and many coins rely on ethereum that you can invest that good for long term investments.  Yes you use ledger and trezor to make your wallet safe. You can hodl it as long as you can but  of course its depend on us how to manage our investment.

Yes, It is one of the most solid projects but 5 years is a lot for crypto markets. Check 2013 list on coinmarketcap, you will see lots of different coins that you don't know today. So things change, there might be newer technologies.

You can buy and put them in a hardware wallet, but just check the market once a year etc.

Well this is bad because Eth was the second quick growing coin in the market and today it is very down. If it is able to survive few more months, bear in mind it is going to bounce back with huge margin. It is risk to invest now but you might also make huge.
