1. Unobtanium
2. Peercoin
3. Namecoin
4. Bitcoin  (yes, it's not an altcoin)

These are the only four I am mining (NMC through merged mining), plus I have bought BTC with USD and UNO with BTC.

UNO is my number one favorite.

Funnny to read the first few pages, and how almost every one of those coins in January are meaningless coins today.

I am going with

Dogecoin
NXT
BitcoinDark

That's a great point. If you look at what is still around, it's LTC, PPC, DOGE, NMC, FTC (barely). The $hitcoins come and go.  A clearly excellent coin that few know about is Unobtanium $UNO.

If you look at the coin, it had as clean of a start as possible, no pre-mine, no unfair advantages, nothing. It is extremely rare as there are only 250,000 ever to be mined.

UNO has a great and active community. Wonderful developers too! There was one large pump by Wolong and then the coin declined and has been steadily growing in value ever since.

Another great feature is convertibility between UNO and precious metals on the in-house exchange. You can check that our here:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=757232

For the long-term, UNO will be a great store of value.  If you only pick up 50 or 100 of them, you'll be really glad that you did in a few years. This is definitely not a pump and dump scheme.  Check it out:

1) uno because it's fair
2) uno because it's longterm real money
3) uno because it has a great community
4) uno because it's rare
5) ltc because it's safe

lowest inflation in town: Unobtanium

LiberyOrDeath - that's a pretty good list but I do think MidasCoin deserves a spot.

Check it out, seriously - don't miss out on this.

IndiaMikeZulu has looked long and hard (and unprofitably) for a 'home-coin'. Finally: (a) uniquely stable price, (b) remarkably dynamic community, (c) built to last . . .

Unobtanium (and Nxt!) And note that 'low volume' is a sign of health in this case!

never heard of pandacoin, darkcoin though is on most people lists

I also haven't heard about pandacoin. Darkcoin is pretty nice coin but, IMO, it's better tom invest in BCN, BBR or DOGE !
note it

I can't imagine that Doge will survive this year. Yes it has his up and downs but as a simple gen. 1 copy coin with no special attributes, it would be hard to see this coin in 2015 still alive.

There is just less support for panda coin, so they will also get big problems. Without supporting people, you definitely can't survive.

My fully support goes just to a few coins atm.

For me personally NEM could be that big player I was looking for a long time.
Especially since you can see or read everywhere threads about NEM. Some of supporters, some of hates. That itself shows me, people are talking about NEM and have discussions about it.
That is a first signal for the popularity of NEM.

Unique Technology is not the most important part of a coins health. I am going to go with #1 trading volume, #2 hashing or similar measure of active distributed network, #4 contributions by individual developers, #5 people that actually use it for things other than speculation

By those measure Dogecoin has most coins beat by 10X, not  exaggerating here, they are #3 in volume, with merge mining they will be #3 in hashing, #2 in dev contributions, #2 in people using for things other than trading.

Dogecoin will be here in 10 years.

Litecoin
Darkcoin
Ripple
BitsharesX
NXT

Because they matter, are actively being developed, have big communities, show enough liquidity to be taken serious and survived more than 6 months.
I always use https://www.coingecko.com/ to get a first insight into cryptos.

Lol. I've not really bothered with alt coins since I got initially got into bitcoin as they were all just the same with the same empty promises but they all had one goal in mind: make their devs a lot of money and fuck everyone else.
