Looking to maybe exchange my investment in bitcoins to an alternate cryptocurrency; one thats liable to blow up like bitcoins did. Any opinions on the up and comers? I've heard good things about Doge and Quark, but I wouldn't know for sure as I'm fairly new to this. Thanks for any and all replies!

Check out the forthcoming Ethereum.  No such thing as a sure thing but there's certainly a lot of interest in it from the community.

Checkout Fairquark, it's still easy to mine, even with an old computer.

We got 5 different teams we're rootin for here. Seems to me they aren't all gonna be going too far, at least not quickly or anything. I'm looking for a relatively safe, profitable return on investment. I don't mind waiting. If I have bitcoins would it be smart to sell those now or hold on to them?

I have a feeling Dogecoin will go up 100 - 500% over the next few months. Because facepalm.

For a coin to compete with Bitcoin it will have to have faster confirmations innovative features and support.

I don't see any coins replacing Bitcoin soon.

Doge is actually a really good coin...
Fad aside. 500% rise is far from impossible.

I can't see people talking about Nextcoin or Ethereum like they do Bitcoin simply because of the name.

Bitcoin sounds nice. Nextcoin sounds like a gimmick, Ethereum is cumbersome to say and type..

Being a BitCoinTalk newb, I'd throw DTC into the list since it has some potential to be useful beyond being currency.

But...  a Scrypt or even a SHA256 version would be even better so that it wasnt relegated to botnet land.

I consider all alt coins as dead except DOGE. The only thing that can compete with bitcoin is community and I don't care what any DOGE hater says, the community is undeniable. Just look at REddit subscriptions and total online at any time. DOGE wins.

Someone should create an index of all coins that has several inputs. Some inputs would be:

1. community, the most important aspect of a coin. I think DOGE rivals beats bitcoin, everything else is geek BS!
2. miner support. Again DOGE is passing if not already passed Litecoin, it crushes everyone else but Bicoin and Litecoin.
3. trusted code base, DOGE clones litecoin
4. New money factor. this would be how many new coins are minted multiplied by current price. If the number is really high, this coin has momentum. DOGE kills all but Litecoin and Bitcoin.

Don't miss the DOGE train because it will be #2 by a mile at the end of 2014

We can only hope doge can sustain, but it just isn't likely.

Anyway Quark would be the one to look into.

Considering fact that Doge recently  landed on second place with Hashrate overthrowing LTC I would say that next few months may be very surprising for many.
