Reuse of old server

My servers are too old. 2U servers or 1 U servers.  All PCI, but I managed to find PCI - PCI-E 16 extensions and purchase some HD 5770.  In fact two for each server, waiting for the parts to be delivered.  I heard of Linux Coin, is it easy to use?  Will it recognize the HD 5770 etc?

So far I'm not actually certain I've seen anyone successfully use the PCI > PCI-e converters.  My guess is that they may require some kind of driver to emulate a PCI-e bus.

If not, yes, LinuxCoin seems dead simple and should recognize a 5770 with no problem.

There's a couple threads on this forum where people report the PCI converters work for them.

If your servers are 2U and 1U I would expect this means they have no room for any add-on cards as large as a GPU. Do you plan to mount them "open-air" now? This and heat removal are your main problems. LinuxCoin should be easy especially if you have some Linux knowledge. Just be aware that after you boot linux, you run the config commands, and then you will have to reboot so X picks up the correct config. Ia ctually run Ubuntu now for this and just followed the "headless ubuntu" tutorial on this forum (search).

Most people don't buy the PCI converters because a few of them costs more than a new mainboard. But if you have the board, cpu and ram this may work out a bit cheaper. The cpu performance has almost no bearing though so server or not even a low-end Sempron works for mining without hash rate loss.

I moved from linuxcoin to BAMT recently, and the uptime is much better. If the miner locks up, it restarts it and reconnects. Also, the multiple rig monitoring with "mgpumon" over ssh is pretty awesome.

kirax, thanks m8 I was linuxcoin and that was the final push I needed to try bamt..... must say i'm impressed
