Initial Coin Offering (ICO), which means it is the earliest coin offer before it is launched into the free market. ICO is usually offered by developers where their goal is to raise funds to develop projects they do in this case is digital coins. They need funds to maximize the projects they do in order to quickly develop and can be completed quickly. For developers they will get funding to accelerate the projects they develop so that they can be enjoyed by many people. For investors will get tokens or coins that later coins can be traded freely in the market exchangers. The advantage for investors who follow ICO before the coin is launched into the free market is the price given will be cheaper. And usually when the coin is launched the price will jump up to more than 5x the price of ICO. This is what makes investors enjoy this ICO.

ICO is Initial Coin Offering, just like IPO (Initial Public Offering) for stock. But here in ICO, offering is in digital currency instead of stock in IPO. Trading is done directly through company and investor. It means if you don't invest in ICO and you want to buy altcoins after ICO, then you have to purchase it through third party assuming all the altcoins are subscribed during ICO and you may be required to pay higher price than at ICO depending on the valuation of altcoins in the market. It is done to raise the fund or finance the projects required for business. It helps in the development of currency market. On the other hand, it is investment opportunity for investor to invest in crytocurrency at very low price. For example - most of the altcoins is priced at one cent at ICO. So, investor can highly benefit from ICO. Example - at ICO the price of altcoin is one cent and after certain time it reached $1. This is 9900% increase in price.
ICO is not technology.

Like a start up

ICO stands for "initial coin offering," and refers to the creation and sale of digital tokens.

In an ICO, a project creates a certain amount of a digital token and sells it to the public, usually in exchange for other cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin or ether.

The public could be interested in the tokens on offer for either or both of the following reasons:

1) The token has an inherent benefit – it grants the holder access to a service, a say in an outcome or a share in the project's earnings.

2) The benefit will be in increasing demand, which will push up the market price of the token.

Tokens, especially those of successful sales, are usually listed on exchanges, where initial buyers can sell their holdings and new buyers can come in at any time.

As a type of digital crowdfunding, token sales enable startups not only to raise funds without giving up equity, but also to bootstrap the project's adoption by incentivizing its use by token holders.

Buyers can benefit from both the access to the service that the token confers, and from its success through appreciation of the token's price. These gains can be realized at any time (usually) by selling the tokens on an exchange. Or, buyers can show their increasing enthusiasm for the idea by purchasing more tokens in the market.

Is ICO an technology or really what is ICO?

ICO is not a technology. Its "Initial Coin Offering" like IPO in the stock market. There is a private sale through which potential investors are requested to invest the funds. They can buy tokens at a cheaper price in private sale. Then the actual token sale commences for the rest of the public and the fundraising is accomplished. It is to start a new cryptocurrency project. Then the token is listed on the exchange to trade.

The ICO is a fundraising event through selling of new tokens. Its aim is to have funding capital to develop related projects. The tokens sold are usually has a function to use as an internal transaction tool. Hence, the coins will be listed on the exchange which can be swapped with etherium or bitcoin.

ICO (Initial Coin Offering)is an unregulated means by which funds are raised for a new cryptocurrency venture. An Initial Coin Offering (ICO) is used by startups to bypass the rigorous and regulated capital-raising process required by venture capitalists or banks. In an ICO campaign, a percentage of the cryptocurrency is sold to early backers of the project in exchange for legal tender or other cryptocurrencies, but usually for Bitcoin.

ICO (Initial Coin Offering) is similar in concept to an initial public offering (IPO), both a process in which companies raise capital, while an ICO is an investment that gives the investor a cryptocoin, more commonly known as a coin or a token in return for investment, which is quite different to the issuance of securities as is the case in an IPO investment.
While ICOs are to mainly raise capital for a start up, they are also used to kick-start the sale of a service to be taken to market or the use of a new cryptocurrency.

ICO is initial coin offering. Startups use ICO to raise fund  for their projects. The startup (new company) will provide a white paper that contains the concept of the project. How much that is needed and what the raised fund will be used for. It also indicates dates the ICO begins and when it will end.

Now that everyone has given the basic point of ICO, (others even gave the meaning of ICO lmao of course ICO stands for initial coin offering), I raise you all this thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3752728.msg37027782#msg37027782

I think that it's really really useful. I found it when I was going through the altcoin board looking for something worth reading. Luckily I have found that. It's for people who are interested in investing in ICOs or going to join an ICO campaign or anyone who's interested in an ICO, basically. I think the writer actually know what he's doing based on the insights that gave in that thread so going through his post history might give you even more ideas about ICO or cryptocurrency in general but of course consult you're bff, google, first. There's more article about ICOs and crypto out there but I just suggested this guy's post because it's written in a way that any of us can understand. Not much of technical words used, only simple English.

ICO is not a technology. From abbreviation stands ICO alone is predictable what sense. ICO is just a cool term for pre token sales before it is released in exchange, which is where you are given a lower price. And the goal is to raise funds from the sale of tokens to finance the entire token project they are working on. No more than that.

ICO is a fund raising mechanism very similar to an IPO (initial public offering of a company's shares). The difference is that the company that attracts funds creates a new crypto currency, and you transfer your money to this company and in return receive this new crypto currency, which carries some obligation.

In simpler words, ICO is a way for the world wide web to raise funds for a concept that a company or an individual believes in. It is a relatively a new concept that has gained momentum and now experiencing a boom in crowdfund sourcing.
