there is absolutely no way of telling. only a mixing service can tell you that and that is only if they analyze the coins that come to them for mixing and this doesn't sound like something a mixing service should ever do. they shouldn't store any kind of data from their users either.
all we can say is that these services are using by both people who have dirty money and want to hide things and the average Joe who wants to increase their privacy.

Though probably majority of the coins being mixed are used in some sort of illegal way, not because you want your privacy to be increased doesn't necessarily mean you're doing something illegal. Me personally, since bitcoin's blockchain is public, I definitely wouldn't want people knowing how much bitcoin I have. Just as you probably wouldn't want people to know how much money you have on your bank account.

I don't think you can call it a "service", certainly most of them aren't activities following the law
Who uses mixing the two above me have answered, if you want examples of those illegal activities probably the top will be made out of dark market traded coins, stolen coins(hacks), and your daily scams (ponzi schemes, fake merchandise, "cloud mining" and so on).

As for the ratio of evil to good, unfortunately, I'll put it to something around 10:1.
Not because there is a huge amount of coins involved in crimes but because of the average joe is not that interested in privacy nor does he realize the traces he leaves behind and the implications.
Probably things will change..but not for a while

In the first place, all those used bitcoin before that so by being a bitcoin user yourself (I guess!!!) you also are involved in an evil project  /removing the tinfoil hat

I've already said it, that ratio is so (in my opinion and I could be totally wrong on it) because of the average Joe is not that concerned yet!!! with privacy. Once people care more about it and they realize the tracks they leave out in the open for anybody to start doxing them, mixing your coins will be a routine

Yes. Bitcoin mixing services do advertise here on bitcointalk through ads and through signature campaigns, since this is a bitcoin forum hence they might get more users through advertising here. Mixers are not "evil", not in the slightest. Sure criminals can use mixers for bad if they would like, but isn't that true for literally everything that's ever existed? If a criminal wants to use something for bad, they will find a way. E.g cars, internet, guns, mixers, Bitcoin, cell phones, etc. I would say actually there are more people using mixers for legal reasons than we think.

Criminals would prefer using cash if they can meet somehow in person, so bitcoin can be helpful only in a situation where the parties are far away. But I guess criminals (who want to use a crypto to transfer money) would prefer the real private coins like monero, etc... instead of bitcoin, so it's possible that mixers has less coins from criminals than you think at first glance...

Well it's pretty difficult to have an idea on the percentage of people using mixers unless these top mixers would make their data statistics public(which I'm quite sure they won't).

General use would be for privacy. Ratio of good and evil would be inclined more to the evil lol. The general community's attitude towards privacy would usually be low priority because they dont have anything to hide.

But ICO scammers, money launderers or the regular pedophiles in the darknet would always try to protect their privacy.

Based on the feedbacks Mixing bitcoins is not evil however it depends on the users god knows what you're doing with your money and that is not our concern wether it's good or bad as long as it doesn't hurt or affect people too much. Mixers provides more secure way for transactions to go smoothly and the privacy of the users kept intact along the way. This service is either bad or good it's your choice. In your own perspective what will you choose?.

I'm not sure I'd agree that "probably" most mixing is for "evil" purposes. We know already that at least since 2016, Bitcoin's use for illicit purposes was scarcely significant. Two years later, in 2018, we have further evidence from the likes of Elliptic (blockchain analytics firm) and even academia that show Bitcoin use for illegal purposes is growing even smaller, far less than 1%, and there is some decent effort to look into mixers, (oh yes, blockchain forensics can still dig up the dirt from mixed coins) and some initial findings that it is also not as "evil" as presumed.

I've used mixers before and will continue to mix them. But hardly for any other purpose than privacy. Same reason I will start calling up companies to remove my personal data once thanks to GDPR.

Yes, there is some criminal use when it comes to mixers, but it's not important and doesn't scare off anyone in need of privacy. The chances are higher that an exchange as Yobit lets you withdraw coins with criminal taint than any Bitcoin mixer in this market. Yobit doesn't care about regulations, doesn't care about KYC/AML, etc. That freedom allows anyone to abuse that exchange at will. There is so much shady activity going on there, that anyone withdrawing coins from Yobit frequently has had tainted coins in its wallet at least once.

I have not used that service in my life and that is why I do not know much that why normal people are using that service. But it is in my mind that those people will use mixing service who will not allowed from their states for the use of bitcoin. They will mix their coins so that their governments cannot trace him from the address to the money to them.

Besides that there are those people using it who have something shady with their coins. They will want to mix bitcoin in address so not identified by anyone.

It is very tough to tell how the mixing service works. They deal with it in their own way analyzing the coins. And about if it is good or bad that totally depend on the perspective of individual. It can different for each person.

I know theres no evidence but saying that it makes no sense is wrong because you know tainted coins from the darknet use mixers to hide their trail from the criminal source.

Having that said, other uses for mixers by users who are not criminals would be to hide wealth from the IRS or hide wealth from the wife which is worse than the IRS lol.

So? It still doesn't make sense. You think there are more "evil people" than good people mixing their coins. But who are you to say this? Where are your sources, research and/or data to corroborate with your "analysis"?

Saying that only criminals only use mixers is the same thing as saying that only criminals use Bitcoin. And we know as a fact that this is not true (p.s: an ACTUAL fact): Report: Less Than 1% of Bitcoin Used for Illegal Purposes

This mixing can do when you can mixed your coins in illegal way based on this it’s fully illegal to use also this types of things should fully prohibited because of this many people can suffer also based on this illegal issue people should leave this services and should aware of it.
