Ledger Will Release The Desktop App This Week

Hardware cryptocurrency wallet manufacturer Ledger is going to launch a new application that will operate on almost any computer. Release for Windows, macOS and Linux will be available on June 9.

Company representatives report that the novelty will combine all functions which support other its applications, incluidid unify and multicurrency. Until now, Ledger users managed their coins with separate applications for Chrome.
Below there is a complete list of characteristics of the upcoming release:
native desktop application (Windows, macOS, Linux);
multicurrency support (28 cryptocurrencies, including bitcoin, etherium and Ripple);
support for various devices (Ledger Nano S, Ledger Blue);
the ability to access the account only for reading without a device (protected with an additional password);

I have always said that the reliance on Chrome is a possible central point of failure for Ledger users, so this step is definitely a step in the right direction for their company. Now people can scrutinize the Open Source code for vulnerabilities and exploits and we do not have to rely on other software developers to change things on the Ledger platform.

Now, they just have to make the firmware upgrades a bit more user-friendly and we would be set to go!

To be fair, you can use electrum to check a hardware wallet pretty easily.

So if Chrome/Ledger went bye-bye, you could still do something about it - they conform to the standard to allow importing your private keys into other wallets.

This is true, but only for few coins - Electrum was primary BTC wallet and then some other developers fork Electrum and make wallets for Litecoin, Dash, BitcoinCash and BitcoinGold recently. For other coins supported by Ledger in case they stop to work, users would need to find a way to extract private keys from seed. I think Ledger is now support 28 or 29 coins, and many new ones are in process to be added on that list.
