I shut down the pool, it was paying out more than that was being mined, so the balances were all wrong.

My balance is also wrong, I had 2,000,000 mined coins

I'm sorry, the pool was paying out more than it should, so some users got more than they should have. The pool wallet is now empty, including all the pool fees, so I decided to rather shut down the pool than increase the chaos... I know, I suck at running a pool Sad

Hate to tell you that, but... yeah, you do ^^

Where have all the coins gone, anyway? To whoever was lucky enough to withdraw?

Yes, the users that had the auto-payment feature on and those that did a manual withdrawal got the coins.

The pool paid out about 600 million, but it's short about 10% (i.e. it paid 10% too much).

Nope, my virus detector did not detect anything. Are you sure? Post the results if you are not a hater from another coin.

SONAR.Heuristic.120

I'm no expert, but Heuristic essentially means "it looks like it could be a virus based on patterns, but we haven't seen it before"
More than likely it will show up as "hack tool" aka mining tool like most wallets before vote it as safe.

Other than the first pool  losing peoples coins and then shutting down.

As a pool runner I can say The only way that happens that i know of  is if the block rewards were set too high and not set automatically adjust. I thought I checked this and it was correct. What was the problem?

That's apparently what happened. Rewards were 10% higher than they should have been. It ate up all pool fees and left the reserve empty.
