You can hide the signatures, but the forum ads are paying for the site maintenance, so they can not be disabled.

Go to your profile and  "look and layout" preferences,

Is there a solution to the second part of the problem? Or should I ask "Request, paid rank to hide ads"?

You can disable forum ads via Profile>Forum Profile Information, and check the box: "Disable ads:". Although, there's a message in brackets after this that asks you politely not to do this. Whether you have this option might be rank dependent, but I don't think it is.

You could probably add custom filters to ad blocker extension, and do it that way if you haven't got the option.

Have no idea about that and never been interested in hiding the ads, this is one way to support the forum which is giving us soo much, so why would you hide them?

If you find a free way to hide them, please consider giving a small donation to the forum, at least that's what I would do if I were you , and be thankful for what you can find/do here...

If you see how much history is hidden here, it's priceless..

Great info man, as usual. I didn't knew that, not that I'm interested in hiding the ads as I mentioned above, but it's good to know Smiley

Edit:
This option is not available for full members and below, idk for higher member.

I was looking for the info to link to, couldn't find it quickly but iirc that option is tied to hero and above.

I hope no one uses it though, the ads are very unobtrusive and it helps with the forums finances so it seems wrong to disable them to me.

Here's another topic which indeed confirms I'm not talking through my arse, and that option does exist. Cheesy

I had a feeling that it was tied to higher accounts, and that's why I did offer the advice of maybe looking at custom filters on an Ad Blocker extension. I'm not entirely sure why something like this would be restricted though to be completely honest with you.

If you are going the Ad Blocker route I believe theymos does change the code to prevent this from happening, and it would require ongoing manual work to keep on blacklisting the ads. I've never tried this, so you'll have to figure it out for yourself if it can be done. Plus, does it really warrant the work that has to be done just to prevent seeing the ads? I barely notice them, and giving enough time your brain will likely ignore them automatically anyway. theymos has some pretty strict guidelines on what can be displayed as a ad so it's not likely that you'll see obstructive ads.

The way theymos has the ads to be displayed he tries for them to avoid adblocker as much as he can

Yeah, but AFAIK they can still be blacklisted, and blocked. I wouldn't recommend it as your contributing to the revenue of the forum which could lead to more moderators as well as rewarding existing ones. But, I also understand the frustration of ads as they are everywhere on the internet these days, and websites are learning to bypass ad blockers.

My opinion is that everyone should have the option to disable ads regardless of what rank they are. However, on second thoughts I can completely understand from theymos' point of view, because at the end of the day it's revenue, and it's partly because of this revenue that mods can be paid. So I do understand that point of view.

Nope, forum ads can't be blocked in general using ABP-style (ie. EasyList-compatible) adblockers without also breaking the forum for you. The page is laid out such that the ad area can't be unambiguously selected by CSS selectors. If you use eg. ABP's Element Hiding Helper, it'll work on the page you're viewing, and then it'll either stop working on your next pageload or start hiding random posts and/or other bits of the forum.

I've also just found the quote that confirms Hero members, Donators, and VIPs have the option to disable forum ads.
I'll add an option next week allowing hero members, Donators, and VIPs to disable advertisements.

Obviously, Legendary members didn't exist back then, but they also inherit the permissions of hero members.

I see. I've just stumbled across the thread where this was all discussed for anyone that wishes to read the ongoing battle against Ad Blockers. Like I said I don't really have a problem with the ads, and don't hide them myself. I do understand if people want too though.

Have you considered allowing everyone to have the option of disabling advertisements? Have it unchecked by default. Most people probably wouldn't bother, but for those who wish to view the forum as ad free as possible could do just that. Maybe, add something along the lines of "By ticking this option you are no longer contributing to the moderation of the forum, and it's improvements" or something along those lines instead of the current message.

This probably answers my question though: Tongue

Is someone holding a gun to your head and making you look at the ads? Tongue I'm free to send you whatever data I want when you request a page, and you can interpret it however you want.

Donate is good. It is already existing. You may see it: https://bitcointalk.org/donate.html Where you can see about donation.

I think forum's ads are not invasive and they have a very clean visual.

Hiding signatures I don't think is an interesting idea also.

The signature may tell a lot about the poster who is wearing it.
Also, I like to see what good posters are wearing. Personally, I always check the projects of good campaigns and good campaign managers.

I like to keep my eyes open for opportunities.

For example, I saw that a lot of good knowledge people were wearing IOS signature. I didn't knew about this project. I read briefly and put it on my radar. If these people are investing their signatures in it (which costs money), probably this is a project that is worth checking it out.

Campaigns which pays a lot of money like Chipmixer, or Fortune Jack, I think these projects could be interesting also. If i am going to use for a service like this, I would probably check these companies. If they are paying so much money in advertising here, the project is doing well and probably they are doing a good service.

Why would you want to disable unobtrusive ads?
They're at least better than pop-ups in other sites
