Dogecoin a popular altcoin has taken steps to avoid hoarding and is on the rise because of this. Transactions in doge surpass BTC
any thoughts?

BTC is still gaining popularity, there is just uncertainty in the market right now.   When home values go down for some periods of time, that doesn't mean owning a home has lost popularity, it just means that a lot of people are sitting on the sidelines waiting to see what is going to happen before they make their next move...

i don't think steps to avoid hoarding is the reason that dogecoin is on the rise, many people who missed the boat on the early low prices of BTC are trying to cash in on a coin that is lower priced (which makes logical sense).

In terms of adoption, BTC is many years ahead of dogecoin...are there even any major merchants that will accept it as payment yet?

Of late BTC prices seem to have just been stuck ... why is it not moving up or down like earlier ?

it is never "stucked".
Price is always up and down Tongue

it is definitely approaching a nice price to buy some more...  I think the buy orders will skyrocket if we get anywhere near $700

Time to slowly accumulate: Remember, BTC does not evolve in a vacuum. there's a world of money out there. and the fiat world is crumbling. It crumbles from the fringes inwards. Therefore you see argentinos and turks and venezolanos losing their coin value due to inflating policies on the central banks... the biggest sinner in the inflation of coins is the USD/fed yet it gets away with it for the time being for being reference coin to the world. this too shall pass. the inherent deflationary quality of BTC will reassert itself in a new wave of buying come the big fiat crashes of mid-late 2014. I could be wrong, but i have confidence in the total lack of fiscal discipline of the array of governments from china to the Us passing through Europe.... they are all Zimbabwes waiting to happen.

Despite being completely unrelated... coincidentally, the move in the value per bitcoin has pretty much mirrored the spike in mortgage interest rates in the past few days.  The candle charts look strikingly similar..

I just changed the Batteries in my crystal ball, and I see $2000.00 by April.

Once people start buying again, the price will go higher than, an ICBM, on it's way to North Korea... To send love. Grin Grin Grin
