trying to get involved in bitcoin and altcoins. If I mine what coin should I mine?

It depends what hardware you are using. If you only mining using your pc you can try mining cpu only alt coins or ripple.

and you will see which is most profitable for you.

Keep in mind that there is shown info only for Scypt /e.g. video card mining/ and SHA-256 /e.g. ASIC mining/ and does not include CPU mining.

Depends on what you have.
If you have an ASIC, just join any bitcoin pool and mine bitcoin.
If you have a high-end AMD/ATI graphics card, you may join multipool to mine the most profitable scrypt coin.
