I've been into Bitcoin for almost a year, but I didn't obtain my first coins until December 2013. At that time, I felt like every other story in the mainstream media was "Bitcoin this, and Bitcoin that!" We had the Silk Road and Dread Pirate Roberts thing bringing bad press, the huge uptick in price, and the pinnacle was when Overstock.com announced that they would be accepting Bitcoin.
Then 2014 came, and it seems like the interest has died down a bit? I am obsessed with Bitcoin, as many on tho board are, but has the media's brief focus on Bitcoin tapered off? Even my mom said "hey, did you know Overstock is accepting Bitcoin?" Bitcoin almost became a household name.
Are my assumptions correct? Or is it just my perception?

Where are you?.. in the UK, it seems there's more than ever. Less hype as such and more substance relative to apparent serious consideration all over. That said, media matters less that people on the street, though I'm rather encouraged by the numbers of random people that do know already about what Bitcoin is.. their reaction isn't even as if it's something they've heard of but rather it's something they consider they understand and want in on. I don't know if that is fuelled by the economic stress we're under but it's encouraging. Once it's easier to buy locally and easier to spend on what we want, I expect we'll see real depth emerge.

I don't think so. I still see bitcoin in the media a lot. Volatility has calmed down in the first month of 2014 , and if it stays that way then sure you won't see a frequent stream of maintream outlets reporting on it every other day. That's expected, they are news outlets not bitcoin news websites

The crossing of the psychological threshold of 1000 USD was a big deal. Also the subsequent 50% drop. I think now, in 2014 as its stabilized somewhat, there is no "news" to grab headlines. Watch when Amazon.com or Target start accept BTC. You'll get your news!

Sometimes no news is good news. All we need is more widespread adoption, and less Silk Road/Charlie Shrem type headlines.

I was on the internet in the early days and i dont remember seeing tonnes of news stories about it at the time, if there was it was negative (hhmm, familiar). We dont need mass media, leave it to the network effect.

Well we're only barely in to the second month, but news has been pretty slow. Not that it's necessarily a bad thing, but I'm sure it'll pick up fairly soon though.

The Hype has died down - And that is a GOOD thing! If you want to know if there is a hype, check the media. Do you hear about Bitcoin everyday? No you don't. WE do, because we are interested and we know where to look. We're information seekers. But are there Bitcoin-Magazines that we can buy? Are there daily reports about Bitcoin? No! Have any relatives or friends asked you about Bitcoin lately? Not me for sure. In my office only ONE person knows Bitcion and he's an IT-guy and STILL does not really understand Bitcoin. There are 30 people in my company. In Germany Bitcoin has vanished from the news. And that is a good thing, because that way we know that this is the perfect time go get INTO Bitcoin. We wil be there when the next hype will set in. And that is probably going to be the BIG one, guys. In all honesty - We are probably to late to become rich. We're MILLIONS now, using Bitcoin. MILLIONS dont become rich, only a few will. The times where you put a Dollar into the system and 2 years later you had 10.000 dollars are over. But we still can make some nice money. There are like 10 Billion Dollar in Bitcoin right now if i am correct. THAT IS FUCKING NOTHING. I see absolutely no reason, why Bitcoin shouldn't gain a tenfold, a hundredfold in the long term. And i am so fucking sure about it! This is not a scam, this is evolution! And it can't and won't be stoped. Cryptocurrencies are the Currency of our age. Its like the next logical step that has to happen. I don't even understand why I feel this way - and i must sound like a Madman - but it seems like the Internet has gained consciousness (boy, does that sound dramatic) and is forming a currency. (Of course the Internet has NOT gained consciousness, but its like the Internet itself has a DEMAND for something like cryptocurrency and so here it IS. Everytime we reached a certain technology-level some kick-ass innovation came along. The car - Nobody belived in the car. Electricity - Fuck no, dont want that. The telephone. Hell no, thats scary. I think that Bitcoin, or Cryptocurrency is not just some hype, not something that is here for a short time, but something that will stay and become a part of the world as we know it. Its not some branch of a tree that will eventually run out, we're riding on the main stem! So to come back to your question. No, the hype is over, but BOY the next one is going to be a big one! When Moms and Pops hop in and want to make some money.

I'd say that hype has died down, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. As hype doesn't always lead to staying power.
As an analogous point, I'd rather have 1,000,000 people following up on Bitcoin on an occasional basis throughout the year than have 10,000,000 people getting sucked in at the same time for a week 2-3 times a year. I'm certain that most establishments would rather prefer the former rather than the latter as it is more difficult logistically to adjust for spikes.
In terms of BTC, sure these spikes are great to make a quick buck, but you can only have so many spikes and you can just as easily get burned.

I like that hype has died down. Speculators and craziness ensue when there is too much hype or panic. The price seems to have nicely settled here which gives support to BTC surviving.

That said, pert of me wonders if Litecoin could eventually have the same monumental rise this year that Bitcoin had last year? Currently BTC and LTC prices are tied together, but could that change? I'm thinking about buying 50LTC at some point in the near future, and just holding onto them and seeing what happens. The problem is, if I wait for a dip in LTC, then there is also a dip in BTC and I have less buying power with my Bitcoins.

I don't think the hype has died down at all, but there doesn't seem to be as much media around what is Bitcoins. 2013 was definitely an introduction year to the general public, and it seems like in 2014 there has been more media around acceptance, ATMs & scams that have been going on. The population seems more informed than before, so there hasn't been as much media around that.

The media can't work if they report excessively on one topic alone. It's why you never see something in the news pass over the month or the like unless it's something earth-shattering kind of good to go with (Then again, you could argue that Bitcoin does qualify as this sort of thing)
It hasn't died down yet if you ask me, but it will eventually, and like many have said already, it won't necesarily be a bad thing. Many of us trust Bitcoin as the future of money, and see it as a sound (but let's not kid ourselves, it's also very risky) investment.
I'd sugguest relaxing, and seeing all of this go through from the advantageous position that we already have.

Looks like there's more stories involving Bitcoin, mostly negative, in 2014 so far.
The 800lb Gorilla in the room is regulation, AML, and KYC and how the government can get their dirty grubby hands on it.

When I wrote that post, google trends was low.. it's shot up quite a bit recently. Almost every time in the past that has lead to a delayed rally as new money starts pouring in. Not sure if it will this time, we'll see.
