Wow!  I find it hard to imagine that will pay off.  Why not just invest the $250,000 in bitcoin instead?

I'm hoping Namecoin takes off and .bit becomes the de facto extension for crypto related ventures.  I listed a few domains very recently on dotbit.me such as donations.bit, payment.bit, remittance.bit, etc for between 0.05 and 0.1 BTC.

The new TLD's came out today at reasonable prices... bitcoin.ventures, bitcoin.guru, etc.  Those were taken right away of course, but others are available.  About 15 years ago I bought some domain names and sold them at a good price.  I doubt these new domains will grab anyone in the same way, but people love owning domains.

That's a crazily expensive investment for a domain that's so general if you're trying to start a BTC wallet business.

I can't see it paying off, but who knows...

There was an article on wired.com the other week about one of the investors in Coinbase. He talked about how a lot of startups he works with pay insane prices like this for a common domain name  and that  investing in domain names back in the 90s is probably the best investment you ever could over done, far better than google or apple etc etc.  Same article he said he thinks bitcoin will be $10,000

You guys simply don't understand the billion dollar domain name industry...

110,000 people PER MONTH are typing in "Bitcoin Wallet" in to Google alone, not to mention how many people type in "BitcoinWallet.com" directly in their address bar. The current Pay-Per-Click suggested bid for one click is $1.60 and the competition is picking up, fast.

It is very difficult to have an intelligent conversation about Bitcoin without mentioning "Bitcoin Wallet".

I predicted this exactly, many months ago actually.

With nearly a decade of experience and more than $100 million worth of media as consultant, broker, developer, or licensor, I am fully qualified to tell you that $250k was not "expensive" but rather a very savvy investment to gain a timeless and global competitive advantage in the marketplace.

The sale is real.

In the next few weeks you will see media publications writing stories about this sale.

Every single "Bitcoin Wallet" company on the planet is competing with their website title tags, H1/h2 headers, meta data, and search marketing details (SEO/SEM) for the generic branding "Bitcoin Wallet". That is an undeniable and absolute FACT.

Here is some free education for you guys. And so, point being, the domain name was actually sold too cheap.

Two word - premium domain asset - sales examples:

AreaRugs.com - $405k
RunningShoes.com - $700k

Yet i always seem to visit websites that have catchy and goofy names... Not domains like those listed above. You could name a bitcoin wallet website kookookacho.com and if the software rocked it would win...

Darn.  mbtc.com is owned by some bank and trust that is not at all Bitcoin related.  I thought it would be a good one to get if it was still available.  They should look into Bitcoin though. Wink

Wow!  I find it hard to imagine that will pay off.  Why not just invest the $250,000 in bitcoin instead?
Because most finance entrepreneurs don't give a flying fuck about Bitcion.  They're just trying to make money off the latest fad.  Therefor their stupidity kicks in, and they treat this like any other startup.  Even if that means blowing $250k on a domain name.  Their trust is in the "Business Plan" and their own ability to grow a business.  Bitcoin is just a tool for most of them.  No awareness of investing in Bitcoin instead, and sitting on 200 million in 10 years.   To them the thought of that happening is absurd.

Good news in any case.

Someone values Bitcoin highly enough to spend that kind of money on a domain name.

Time will tell if the service they put behind that name will make the money back. If it does, all the better. Smiley

And if it is just speculation, well, how can people speculating on Bitcoin judge that. Wink

Lol you got ripped off. Register them yourself with the Namecoin wallet/client and pay .02NMC per name         1NMC = $5 do the math

Why you mad bro?

Let's get some facts straight. This domain wasn't purchased for giggles. The dreaded "finance entrepreneur" likely purchased this to build a killer wallet for us all. How could anyone argue that this is bad? Sure, the person dishing out the $$$ probably doesn't understand Bitcoin fundamentals like some of us do, nor will they be spending sleepless nights in front of a screen coding the app, but thats not their job.

How exactly do you expect Bitcoin to reach these monumental heights you speak of, if no one builds it?

It sounds like you already think long-term, big picture, about the price of bitcoin. Try applying that same logic to the infrastructure  Wink

I did register them myself about 2-3 months ago when I first discovered bitcoin and started researching other cryptos.  Yeah, it costs about $0.07 / domain.  I recently sold a few for between 0.05 and 0.1 BTC on dotbit.me and on the Namecoin forums.

Wow I can't believe I didn't think of that. Buying domain names that could become popular and  then resell for huge profit. I guess it's pretty much too late for Bitcoin domains at this point though?

All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.

It's pretty much mostly over for most types of domains, unfortunately.

This is exactly right. And it is a positive for bitcoin.

I registered (and later sold or developed and sold) a good number of domains in 1993-1994. Like buying a vacant lot in central London.

The new TLDs are good because it increases the value of the .com/.net/.info/.org space because of confusion.  Did they say ".guru" or ".brians" or ...
