You can install a Virtual Machine if you want install a new/suspicius wallet, this one is free https://www.virtualbox.org/.
Of Course, this is only if you want to partecipate on the airdrop, If you want do others thing you need a deeper investigation.

Somewhere I read the wallet successfully passed virusscan, so I think it's safe but in doubt better install through a virtual machine.

I don't think the project is scam, but you have to always DYOR and even after that sometimes only time will tell you if the project was worth it or not.
