Hi all,

I currently have an R9 290 (MSI) 4 GPU rig which is powered by a Silverstone Strider 1500W.  I have an additional R9 290 card sitting here (same type as other 4) and want to add it in.  However, I don't think my PSU will handle 5 R9 290's and I don't want to buy a 1500W PSU for one card.

Is it okay to put a smaller PSU in for the fifth card?  I've run dual PSU before on my last rig and jump started the 2nd PSU but they were the exact same PSU's.  The risers will be powered from the main 1500W PSU and it'll just be the 8 & 6 Pin power cables being powered from the smaller PSU.

Thanks,

MB

Yes, just be sure to get a psu with ovp and uvp protection and be sure it can handle the gpu with 12v lines it has, in other words don't get the cheapest psu availeable. One last thing, don't mix up  2 psus in the same card, two different 12v voltages with different grounds may damage the card. If you follow all this you are safe.

No problem but I would recommend buying one of these.

I have 4 rigs using 2 PSU's and all are connected via https://www.hashratestore.com/shop/cables/dual-power-supply-adapter-cable-24-pin-atx/

Just don't share a GPU between two different PSUs or the ground may compete and cause one PSU to shut down.
