Every time a block is mined, a certain amount of BTC (called the subsidy) is created out of thin air and given to the miner. The subsidy halves every four years and will reach 0 in about 130 years.

How effective is the standard "mom and pop laptop" currently at mining Quark, or any other "CPU coin"?

The only way a laptop is going to mine anything effectively for more than a few hours is if it's being used to control a botnet, or rented cloud power and VM's.

It is impossible to make it CPU ONLY mineable.  The way to keep GPU miners out is to make it unprofitable for them.  My suggestion is to award the coins not to the first solution presented, but to  a random solution solver. Instead of increasing the difficulty level each block, increase the number of solutions that must be presented before the award.

No matter how difficult the block, a GPU will always out perform a CPU.  If you were into computers in the 80s and early 90s, you would remember how long is took a CPU to load an image.  You could actually see the image load, line by line.  A 480x600 image in color, could take over a minute to load.  When Graphic cards came out, even the early 500k cards, the images loaded in a second or two.

If the award goes to the 20th or 50th solution, randomly, the GPU miners will find it unprofitable.  When a new block is released for hashing, the GPU miners will solve it very quickly, and submit the solution.... while the CPU miners will eventually solve it, but lag behind.  The pools will likely be the first to submit, solo GPU miners second, and CPU miners third.  Awarding coins to the 20th solution will increase the chances that a solo CPU miner gets the coins, and not a pool or a GPU miner.

There are plenty of coins for GPU and pools to mine.  It would be beneficial to the popularity of mining, if a coin, or two, was set up to largly favor CPU miners.... the average joe with a laptop.

I have quite a few GPUs. But, I agree with this dude or dude'et.

Well there Nocturnal, I have two old laptops running 24/7 performing CPU mining on DOGE.  I get 14K hashrate per laptop..... not very great, but better than just letting them sit on the shelf, unused.  It generates around 75 DOGE a day thru Multipool.us.

So CPU mining is possible with laptops.... just not as profitable as ASIC or GPU mining.

Making this GPU proof is simple. Make it a primecoin fork with low starting difficulty around 7.0 or less. This will allow everyone with lower end cpus a chance at finding a block before the difficulty gets too high and favors only the overclocked i7's

A primecoin fork will also keep most of the pool operators away.

no it wont.. all it will do is give a botnet operator a very good chance at taking most of the coins.

i think this will be the same as max but apparently better, as maxcoin has been out for a while their are qt wallets and compiled gpu miners available. i still cant understand why the maxcoin devs gave everyone the masters to compile them selves within an hour of the launch, i personally couldnt get it all working in time.  Embarrassed

so if their is a gpu miner available prior to launch everyone can test it first on a maxcoin pool so they know its working. pools ready at the launch would be a bonus too.  Cheesy

Yes we will not release untill we have all the required stuff ready, windows gui wallets, stratum code, cgminer all of it
I've even got a few minor MAX patches in the pipeworks.

Work is going pretty well, been working with Stacy on some idea's we can't make public (yet).

New website almost ready..

...we also have a name-troll who's jumped into the game to deal with now: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=466174.msg5153705#msg5153705

Well because we're not pre-mining I'm not sure how I could fund a faucet. I will look into it though, maybe we can get donations or something... I do get your point, I'm one of the poorer peeps also Wink

I spent most of my #MAX getting some of the code they/we need bountied btw

So, why support this pricks? If you'll make the coin easy mineable at laptops, suckers with botnets will take it. If you'll make GPU coin - GPU farmers will be first etc etc

I believe the only "fair" algorythm is PoS, and it makes sense. You believe in this coin? Then buy it and you'll have more and more!

Hey, we're keeping the algo and code pure from MAX, its a little challenging on the build side as keccak is quite new but PoS (and I'm a big PPC fan) is not really part of the scheme I'm afraid sorry
