Wow, is this for real?

"Snowden downloaded entire roster of U.S. government – all names, home addresses and other personal info of **all** officials and gov’t employees — including law enforcement — plus bankers, corporate boards of directors and more!"

http://beforeitsnews.com/alternative/2014/02/interesting-snowden-news-snowden-downloaded-entire-roster-of-u-s-government-names-home-addresses-and-other-2893546.html

http://www.turnerradionetwork.com/news/266-pat

If 1200 websites, including Wikileaks and Anonymous, now have this info, will Bitcoin fare better or worse at the hands of government, at least the U.S. government?

That would be awesome if it were true, but I kind of doubt it.  I would expect that if it were true there would be a globally distributed 'insurance.aes256' like thing floating around.  No reason to rely on websites to execute the distribution and a lot of reasons not to.

I'm surprised there have not already been a bunch of phony 'snowden_insurance.aes256' files floating around to be honest, but I've not looked for them so maybe there are.

LOL snowden seriously gets cheeky now he is hiding behind the beacon of true democracy and civil liberties (russia).

Also, if you think this is even remotely true, you are foolin yourselves. Those info are out of date, and honestly not something people can't find out by hacking USPS or something.

It's not about what you can do. It matters more what happens afterwards.

In this kid's case, he had to bitch out and run to fucking china and russia to keep from getting ass fucked to pieces. What a circus when reality meets smartass internet 'heroes' eh?

BTW, an 'insurance' file is somewhat more tricky than it may seem at first glance.  It opens up a threat from people who would like to see the info released for other reasons.  It is really only workable for someone like Assange who very may have a bunch of dirt on just about anyone.  Snowden may or may not be in this category.  Could well be though.

It is interesting to note that people all the way up to Eric Holder making noises about some sort of compromise with Mr. Snowden.  There must be some really really interesting stuff which is not yet released for that to happen.

I would expect both Assange and Snowden to be smart enough so that an insurance file is actually a Christmas stocking filled with a bunch more time-release goodness.

That line got me as well.

It's interesting that it is okay that the govt knows everything about its citizens, but if it's the other way around, it's a scandal. Interesting.

But all of this seemed a bit too good to be true, so we'll see.

It seems odd that all contact info to everyone in the entire government was saved at the same place, or even that one person was able to get hold of it all.

Who can you trust to keep a secret, for how long? When the info starts leaking out, banks will start to soft-peddle Bitcoin transactions... out of fear. And so will government.

Notice that Wikileaks' Assange was listed. It may not have been done all at the same, time or saved in the same place.

The file would be encrypted with the password to be released upon mishap.  The 'web sites' would conceal the fact that they had the file and ability to publish the data if unencrypted.

This seems inherently less robust to me than just distributing the encrypted file in advance to everyone who wants it (along with a checksum of course) as did Assange.  Web site operators could be put under considerable threat, and it would be possible to severely criminalize the act of disseminating or obtaining this data in raw form as well as to carefully monitor and record exactly where the data flowed.

Assange's data is sitting on thousands of thumb drives waiting to be read (if there is anything there at all.)  Even the global internet itself is not especially necessary to get at the data.

That Assange-style was not the chosen method for promoting this threat leads me to believe that the story is probably bullshit.
