I have been waiting since October 2017 for my account to be recovered despite providing a signature which has already been verified by a staff member Hilariousandco. Would it not make sense to allow more people to recover accounts? Maybe promote hilariousandco who has made a effort to contact cyrus/theymos multiple times for myself and others and verified the message already.

I understand that this takes time and there is a lot of people wanting their accounts recovered but thats why there should be more staff able to do it. How about allowing all global moderators to do it?

I find it hard to believe that either theymos/cyrus has not seen the message because my thread has had over 2000 views.

I think what Vod said is true:
Here is what I don't understand.... Theymos is intelligent when it comes to programming.  He could easily create a type of account that had limited moderator abilities - specifically  the security rights to unlock an account.  A trusted user (like me) could spend some time to review signed messages and restore accounts, reducing workload.
I guess he just does not prioritize account recovery.  I understand his reasoning, since losing your account is, in most cases, your fault.

I see many members waiting for their account recovery because hacked or any reason with sending the proof (SignMessage) but what I see almost all don't get a definite answer.

they only have patience and hope

I feel your pain OP, I’d be pretty pissed off if I lost my account for any sustained period of time to be honest.
You’ve done what you’re supposed to do in order to recover it though so it should be sorted for you eventually.

Good luck!

Everyone would be pissed off if they lost their account, especially if the account is a higher ranked one, and i see there are so many of people lost theirs in meta section.
Even though it is not priority in here to recover account because there are so many reasons not to prioritize it and there are other works too, i hope you got your account back.

Be patience in waiting.

I do not think that recovering accounts merely is signing a message and then verifying that message but requires user verification. "More investigations to verify the user."
These investigations require more time to verify that you are the actual user of that account and have not sold it and attempted to recover it.
Also, the rank and importance of your account play a role in determining the time required to recover it since the overall error returns to you in protecting your account.

I agree with hugeblack on this matter,
because recovering an account is not only solely based on signed message
but also require further (undisclosed method of) investigation by theymos or cyrus
and this thorough checks can only be done by user with full access to forum's logs and user's infos
allowing more people to recover accounts would be essentially giving more power and access to sensitive data

I understand that theres more to the process but looking into depth should not take as long as its taking. I havent recieved any message off cyrus or theymos even though ive contacted them multiple times. I have always waited a while before resending them a message to avoid spamming them.

maybe the problem for them (lose their account):
1. don't have the specified time to wait
2. theymos / Cyrus doesn't have time to answer (PM) whether the account will return or never come back again.

apart from all that, it's all their rights (theymos/Cyrus)

If this guess is true then it's much better to disable the account recovery section rather than not focusing it as it's the fault of the account owners, but I hope this is not the reason behind the delays of recovering of accounts instead the manpower behind is very small compare to the massive number of queries in recovering accounts.

Would it not make sense to allow more people to recover accounts?

I understand that this takes time and there is a lot of people wanting their accounts recovered but thats why there should be more staff able to do it. How about allowing all global moderators to do it?

It would make sense, yes, but for some reason this isn't happening. The only reason I can think of is theymos doesn't trust anyone else to do it. Not sure why, but if theymos or cyrus aren't going to do it then they should either give someone limited access to restore them or find someone else to do it. Theymos did once mention the possibility of hiring someone externally to run the forum (quote below) but not really sure how that would be any better than having an existing staff member do it, but the rate they are getting recovered (or more pertinently not being recovered) has been a huge problem for some time. If theymos isn't going to give access to someone to help restore them then at the moment then it looks like they're just not going to get restored any time soon.

It seems that income skyrocketed in 2017, but mod payments did not keep up. My understanding is that mod payments should be 25% of income. What happened?

I posted an estimate like that a long time ago, but it was an estimate as of that time, not a guaranteed amount. The mod payments algorithm has never taken forum income into account whatsoever, and you can see that in 2015 and 2016 it was much higher than 25%.

The increased-value reserve and massive 2017 income (which may well have been just a weird temporary trend) came pretty suddenly. I'm not sure yet how best to handle it. I've been thinking of maybe allocating some of the money toward creating a registered non-profit which would have a similar mission as the forum, but would focus more on things like free-speech legal battles and the development of true decentralized forum software. I also need to figure out ways of delegating more, since I am absolutely swamped as things are right now. Perhaps I could hire someone with a business degree or something who can act more like a proper CEO. Suggestions publicly or via PM are welcome, but please focus more on structural improvements rather than lists of things to throw money at. This has already been the case to a large extent, but especially now, the limiting factor is mostly time/people/skill/trust rather than money.

I think what Vod said is true:

They don't have to be a priority, but it seems like they're not even being put on the 'to-do list'. Users aren't really getting any responses at all regarding their accounts from what I gather.

I do not think that recovering accounts merely is signing a message and then verifying that message but requires user verification. "More investigations to verify the user."
These investigations require more time to verify that you are the actual user of that account and have not sold it and attempted to recover it.

They will require more work than just verifying a signed message, but I don't think most of them are even getting looked into or having their messages verified in the first place. Some cases are almost certainly open and shut and they've provided several signed messages with plenty of other evidence, but if they still don't meet the standards or something looks suspect they should probably be told about it. All they're going to do otherwise is keep bumping their threads or PMing the mods about it wasting everybody's time in the process.

it's very sad,
while communication in this forum is required, if there is communication at least they know the status of their account, at least it can make them stop waiting in empty space and no longer write it in Meta or bump PM

I really sympathize with the loss of so many investments, but I do not recommend giving up (keep writing in topics, moderators). Although it's not their fault that the account was hacked, it could have been frozen and tried to verify the identity ... I hope that the administration will nevertheless take up this task / will find specialists to solve problems with the restoration of accounts. Roll Eyes
