While reading the blockchain (I always do that when I'm bored with the phone book), I stumbled upon some strange activity around a number of addresses which all start with 188888. They seem to do a lot of transactions between themselves and also donate some coins to the genesis address. Is this some preparation for a physical bitcoin project or something?

You can see the kind of activity quite nicely at this address:

Yeah, well, I'm gonna go build my own blockchain. With blackjack and hookers! In fact forget the blockchain.

Maybe it could happen and if it was for a physical bitcoin project, it would be great, because the physical bitcoin I think is also very necessary.

it could be a fictitious address, but I think it's great to send a few coins to a random address, and I hope my address is sent by their coins.
