Hello all,

Recently I just got back into the mining scene (Haven't mined since bitcoin was at $2). I was able to get a hold of 3 R9 290 TRI-X for a really low price.

I've used riser cable before (The shit IDE 16x to 16x ones) and they would burn out on me. I noticed that new risers (Powered ones with caps) are on the market. I currently saw this one on eBay:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/PCI-e-express-1X-16x-Riser-Extender-Card-molex-power-50CMS-USB-3-0-Cable-/221337922681?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3388c4ac79

Some miners are using this 1x on the 16x slot on the mother board. Can I connect a 1x on my asRock z77 Extreme3 16x slot?

Why would I use a 16x to 16x riser instead of this 16x to 1x riser (Assuming that I'm going to connect the 1x on the 16x on my mobo)?

Thanks.

1x risers are better than the rest.  usb risers are better than the rest.

The way I understand it is that the 16x doesn't give you a benefit for mining.   It increases the data bandwidth to and from the card, not the calculations done by the card.  So I guess the reason why you would use a 16x instead of a 1x wouldn't be for mining.

I think for running video games on a mining rig, a 16x should theoretically give you a better gameplay experience depending on how the video card leveraged the GPU bandwidth.  But if you are strictly talking about mining, then the 1x would be ideal.

When purchasing Risers, I try and look for two things.   1)  A Black cable on the Molex adapter.   2)  A Capacitor.   These two things are a little harder to find, but I like the added insurance policy on protecting my motherboard and cards.

#Edit:  Please change the topic to "Riser" instead of Riber...

^ Correct.  16x riser for Gameplay/movies/video/rendering/etc.  1x risers for mining.  Some motherboards can't supply the bandwidth if you use all 16x risers, that's why everyone uses 1x.

Order those from me, not from china. Look for my ebay auctions or my website in the signature link for a better price.
